...and how much is the average charge by other registrars to give you a registry connection?

Thanks,

I think thats not so bad??
If You would have got motherboard.com then You had already made back $27k + , but only connection will not to the work, You need scripts + someone who can set it up and so on! Really don`t know. But it`s good idea, if You have the money!

Hi Adam. Very good question.

I will probably get flamed for this, but I strongly disagree with the idea.

Right now DNForum is basically neutral. All of us go OUTSIDE to research and acquire our inventory. Then we all come together here to buy and sell and communicate with each other. A Very nice setup.

I think your idea would DRASTICALLY change all that. Instead of a neutral forum for buying and selling, we become a registrar?

Is it private? Public? Members only? Is there a higherarchy for access?

The advantage to the elite few would be obvious, but what about the masses? What's the advantage?

I think the potential for abuse, monopolistic practices and creating class envy/warfare is very high! Right now we all mostly get along really well and work on a level playing field. This could be a HUGE can of worms!

May I suggest, if you want to be a registrar, an outside non-DNF company? This place works very well as is. Unless there is demonstrable benefit to ALL paid members, let's leave it that way.

I'm sure you've heard the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

IMHO,

I don't think it costs 70K, I think you just have to prove that you have 70K in capital. I believe the costs are more like 4K per year for .com/net/org, with a $2500 application fee.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

I understand WebCat's concern, and agree on some level.

I would like the idea of dnforum partnering with a separate company (which is what I originally thought the idea was), but having it be one-and-the-same would be a conflict of interest. I feel forums ALREADY start having problems when a particular service is endorsed, and forum-goers are often made to feel "unwelcomed" to freely discuss competing products (often by other forum goers).

When I listen to the news, read the paper, or listen to the radio, the conscern is expressed in their need to properly identify when they are being underwritten or have relationships with entities that are the subject of their material (or face peer scrutiny). In a forum environment, while having "utilities" is GREAT, and highlighted services of sponsors, its important for ME, that huge investments aren't made that make or break the enterprise if they aren't financially supported by the community. The paid Membership transition has been tough enough, but if dnforum becomes a competitor of SnapNames and/or Namewinner, as well as a competitor to eNom or OpenSRS... it suddenly gets very murky as to the politics of the information passing through the system.

A partnership would be great, but IMHO more than that (in whatever direction it leads), might seem more than a bit much for the integrity of the forum as a source of news and unbiased opinions.

I'm currently impressed and appreciative of the companies that have taken the time to answer customer questions in this neutral environment. I'd not like to see that change.

I think this would benefit DNF and all of its users if planned carefully.

Can you (or someone) please explain how? Where's the benefit?

Obviously those who CONTROL the connection/registrar are at a huge advantage.

I think myself and nexus have clearly outlined a host of potential PROBLEMS. I have yet to read one post outlining the BENEFITS.

I paid good money to join a domain name forum, not a registrar. Is there something wrong with the way DNF works now?

Respectfully,
WebCat

No offense, but I tend to see this more as natural vertical integration, very much like the auction and chat as horizontal expansion. Just my two cents.

For it to benefit all members, it would have to be setup like snapnames, or dropwizard, where only one "snap" per domain exists. Otherwise, only the members with deep pockets benefit.

Aside from my "competition" concerns noted above, I would have concerns about the development of a full-featured domain management system to accompany being "the registrar". So many registrars out there have bad interfaces still. I would really feel odd if snapping names meant being forced to deal with a long "hey we're new" level of registrar services. I'm happy the auction is getting back on track, but being a registrar sounds like an even BIGGER commitment of support for post drop situations and technical issues.

While I might agree, it sounds like the community would probably be served better by a bidding environment like NW. Multiple chances at participation. One would however need to deal with the "fraud" issues, but the membership system would come in handy for that.
