Sucks to hear this, but I'm sure you'll have it back very soon. Feel free to post should you get the domain thieves' real details.

Hi Folks,
It's 11:15 am here and so far nothing from Godaddy's Undo Group. Hopefully this is very straightforward and they do say their hours are from 8-4 west coast time. This really bites because we have so much content on REX for many of our other sites. The host and all our data still is intact, but without the domain attached to the host it all becomes unacessable.

I've provided GD with everything they asked for so I am again hopful that this will be a quick resolve. In the meantime I am checking out the various levels of protection beyond registration to provide more security and preventative measures from this in the future.

Though I still do not understand HOW this happened in the first place, what I want to know for sure is how to keep it from happening in the future. There does not seem to be any sort of tracking kept when domains change accounts, which does surprise me. I assumed that IP numbers would be kept in the account and logs.

From what I understand GD seems to provide the same protection as several of the other top registrars, is anyone here more familiar with the use of the services?

Ok, its 11:50 and I just emailed GD and already heard back from them. REX.COM is now back in my new GD account, Thank God! (and Horray for Godaddy!!) I had to change my nameservers and a couple of other things to get it to point back to its original host, but hopefully once propulgation resolves it will all be back to normal.

Now, on to figuring out how to keep this craziness from EVER happening again!

Congrats! glad there was a happy ending!

Me too! Talk about nervous tension! I have to say my hat really goes off to GD. They kept their cool even when mine was not and they were really understanding. The problem has been resolved in just about as fast of time as I guess I could have asked for. I am still waiting for the domain to resolve to my original host so the web sites can return alive, but hopefully that will propulgate quickly.

I spoke with GD today about Protected Registration, which sounds like what I want on the domain. For $25 a year, seems like a bargain in my book. Anyone else have any input on GD's protected Reg? From what I understand I would have to actually send my credentials and ID to godaddy should I ever want to move the name in the future.

Read the whole post and glad to see godaddy helped solve the issue. Bit of a scarey thing to happen

Scarey does not even begin to describe it in my book :) This is the type of issue that can create heart attacks.

My modis operandi today is security, I guess it takes a situation like this to really send you into that mode.

I am really concerned about the other threads I am seeing in this legal forum about Yahoo backdoors, password resetting and the like.

What I still dont understand though, is how my GD account was hacked. There is no information in my email with details about my GD account that I can tell. And it was not my mail account that was hacked, it was my GD account. when the domain was transferred away from my account, there were no confirmation emails, no password reset confirmations, no email change confirms, nothing. yet I was still getting other godaddy emails regarding expiring domains, specials, etc...I just really dont get what the heck was happening...

Married.com which the owner got back without incident from Godaddy. They are great when it comes to issues like this.

Ummm.... there was a whole heck of a lot of "incident" involved in getting married.com back.

And for an additional $10 per year, they won't come to your house and poke a stick in your eye.

Does GoDaddy act equally fast for all "commoners" or one has to be of royal ancestry? Sorry, a pun on "rex" that I could not hold back :)

Haha, I guess I would even pay the $10, as I do need my eyes for my other creative adventures.

John, again, thanks for just being on the other end of the phone yesterday. As I said, an issue came up, remembered your name from here, linked to your web site, found a phone number and got you on the phone is 60 seconds flat. That is exactly how things should work in a perfect world to me. It was/is appreciated.

Also, just got an email from an account exec at GD with some very helpful information. Again, so far I am really pleased with the level of support of GD.

This has been a really stressful situation and I am really happy to be a member of DNForum and GD and benefit from the people and services that surround them. This is the epitome of professional domaining.

I think you should check your computer.

With the right trojan, someone can access fully your computer:

-Keylog the godaddy account info
-use YOUR ip to log in to the computer

All the "https" things will not work against it, https is only a secure layer between your internet connection - and the https website (making it impossible to "sniff") but not impossible to keylog, or make browser screenshots.
