In the last big economic downturn domainers like Frank Schilling and Kevin Ham made their fortunes by buying up assets few others wanted. Could history repeat itself in the current slump? Rick Schwartz predicts some domainers will indeed hit it big, but the new fortunes will come from something other than domains!

I still believe the future is with domains, just not with .COM.

I took it to imply that it is time for domainers to put on the big boy pants and get into the business mode.

There is a massive difference in being in the domain business and the business of domaining.

I wrote about this a while back.

Along with the business of domaining comes marketing skills. And not just for domains.

SEO is one thing but that is a reliance on some algorithm that people are going to find you.

You have to market yourself and your product.

Your product has to be packaged, branded, polished, shiney and have fresh new appeal.

Diversification of a portfolio in great, but you better be diverse in your skills and business practices.

I'm not necessarily talking about Rick, decent guy, did domains well and made it big and I respect his opinions most of the time......but it gets so damn old constantly hearing what people think. LinkedIN, here, DNJ, everywhere...suddenly everyone is a damn expert you know? Like the guy that owns 3 hyphen .coms and he's giving people appraisals on linkedin...lord have mercy. The domain market is down...the market is up..thats a good name, that isnt a good name...develop it..should I sell it...wheres a good place to sell...who knows man...

Gotta do what you think is best for you.

For me, offers are up, sales are up (for the moment).

Am I selling to cheap, am I asking too much, do I have the right stuff?

These are questions asked of yourself no matter what the economic conditions are.

Just like hyphens suck.

Well, I just sold one a few weeks ago, a private sale via sedo.

LLLL suck.

Well, I just sold one in a private sale on Sedo and turn down lowball offers constantly.

Mobi sucks.

Well, I just turned down a 500 buck offer on a hindi word meaning cars, sold one, co-developing another, and turn down offers constantly on my geo mobis.

Net sucks.

Well I just sold three last month.

This sucks, that sucks.

It all sucks but then again, it all sells.

So who is right and who is wrong.

Priceless!

Every newbie and those not so new must read and use this (above) in their business operations. Else, it will cost you BIG.
