Anybody had the experience of seeing an old domain of theirs selling for a lot more money that they sold it for.

Perhaps, you let a name drop and then seen it sell for decent money?

I was reminded of this, in the t1m.com sale going on which I originally registered but also sold a long while ago for cheap (before CCC were bought at).
I also sold a domain fairly cheaply $xxx which later appeard on DNJournal sales page for low $xxxx. I wasnt to bothered as I knew I sold it for a good reason and that money would have been crucial at the time or i never wold have sold it.

Still, it must be a kick in the teeth for some people to see an ex domain of theirs selling for grillions. There are names I KNOW I have ultimately sold too cheaply but I havent actually seen their future sales price. I certainly sold a couple of LLL.coms for a few hundred dollars on Ebay! Then again, back in 2003/04 that was the going reseller rate!

Sometimes there is no telling what names will bring the most. So you take your best guess, weight the options and go from there. Keep in mind that a good investment will continue to grow in value, whether you are still holding it or for the next person to realize a profit. I am most happy when I see one on my sold names as a developed site. Nice to see it has been put to good use.

This seems the fear of every domainer out there .They are afraid of leaving to much money on the table so they jack up their names at the highest possible value. I would like to encourage people/domainers to not worry about selling a domain for xxx and seeing it sell for xx,xxx. Since this are just the mechanics of a expanding market performs. The thing domainer should try to concentrate on is getting the sale and when I sale this domain could the return on my sale allow me to purchase a name of greater value. This should always be the objective which I learned from a wise domainer. One name I could see selling for a lot of money that I have possed was a name called CollartizedDebtObligations.com I sold the name basically to raise funds and I actually been studying up on realestate these were a very hot niche market these were basically a form of mortgage loans so this was a category killer domain . But hey these are the brakes in doing business you cant know the future and predict every single thing and trend. So all I have to say dont worry about leaving money on the table get the sale since the sale can better than you not selling the domain and someone picks your domain name at a drop catcher and sale it for xx,xxx and you have made any profit. so some profit is better than none

Today, I would suggest keeping and renewing given the climate. Don't be afraid to ask the higher dollars for good generics.

1) On several occasions I pitched names here on DNF for $xx and had them go UNSOLD, only to later sell it for $xxxx.

2) I have, in the past, dropped names that were sold in the drop auctions for $xxx. Most of them I had attempted to see here at $xx with no offers.

I am amazed that I am posting list of 100+ generics for $xx, many older .com's, and only a few DNFers bite.

This thread has brought 2 clear messages to my mind, which I have never really dwelled on before.

  1. Youre right.. domainers often make their decisions out of fear. More often then not, this will lead to a NO-SALE, when they could have sold, reinvested and moved-on.
  2. Its bloody annoying when you try to sell the bolox off a domain name on all the forums and sales forums and then let it drop, only to see it picked up for $xxx on a backordering site... :disappointed:
Oh, and 3. In an ideal world we would renew ALL these names. Obvioulsy, at some point we saw value in them and had this hope they make us rich. Truth it, are we not far too sentimental with ou registrations, become blinkered and really should drop them. I have dozens of domains which I registered in the early 2000s which I still renew and have never had a hint of an offer on them! :uhoh:

Yeah emotionally it sucks, but your emotions won't make you $ in business. You can't see the future, you just make the best decision you can w/ the info you have at the time. If it happens best to just take the lesson out of it and move on quickly, clear your head so you can take advantage of the market in front of you and ahead of you.

For me, that name was Netbook.com, which last September I could have had for 20k. I passed, and three weeks later Intel snagged it. I'm sure for big money.

I would use the memory as fuel the next time you come across a similar deal and have a good gut feeling about it.

I see domains I drop getting picked up quickly in catches - some going onto auctions and fetching low to mid $xxx . Sad I couldn't find those buyers when I still had them :)

Ah jezuz.. Lets hope that they used an alias in the negotiations and only bought it for similar money.

Hindsight is always great, I can;t blame you for turning that down. Thats a lot of money for what was by no means a dead cert.

Same experience here. Some time ago I posted a few large lists of several hundred names I was thinking about dropping to trim my too large portfolio. Some I reg'd as long as 10 yrs ago, many with at least a little organic or typein traffic, some with links, most listed in the SEs, some with a bit of income, but barely any inquiries and zero sales. Keep in mind these were not dubious value brandable names but were solid multi-keyword domains many in well paying catgeories.

Ironically a few mos later I checked and a lot of them were picked up on the drop (probably for $60 or more), many grabbled by BuyDomains.com, but at dnf I could not even get $10. I even posted my willingness to take most any offer (even under $10) no matter how low but zilch

ditto. Sad and very odd too. Several times buyers posted the same week or even same day I posted the big lists looking for the same type names I was offering (low price keyword domains, mostly .com).

Funny isn't it, domains seem to take on a certain aura once they are up for a drop, they adopt an inherent value (if they are not complete junk) because they were not avail to reg for a while...add to that the effects of bidding and competition during an auction and people will pay more for many names then they would pay you aftermarket. Of course some bidders were not aware of some names until they dropped because they were not out actively searching for names to buy. Another factor is that some people feel more comfortable paying an auction than a reseller...especially when they see other bidders showing interest.
