Should I bother with the DNFauction, or go straight to Ebay? Is DNF still worth $50?

Thank you everyone for contributing to this discussion.

Now that I have thought over your comments, and also tried Ebay a bit (some success but nothing to rave about)---here is my opinion.

I assume that for me, membership here is worth $50. I have not yet made any sales over $10, but after all I have a lot of domains, and already I have learned a lot.

However, just because it is worth $50 for ME personally---this does not exclude it from being "overpriced." I believe this definitely is overpriced for the following reasons:

1. Membership here is definitely not worth $50 for the average person who only has a dozen or so domains to sell, or who just wants to buy an aftermarket domain for their own use at a reasonable price.

2. If membership cost were cut in half ($25) this probably would not immediately double the number of members---therefore, the owners of this forum probably would make less profits in the short term. However, there probably would be a significant increase in the number of members. This would be a big advantage to members, because more people buying means more sales. (And also more opportunities to buy.)

3. Other forums such as DomainState.com are totally free and are rising in popularity and reputation. If DNforum.com does not lower its fees, eventually it may become obsolete.

4. On the other hand, if DNforum.com were to lower its fees to $19.95, this would totally forestall the growth of DomainState.com and other free forums. Then almost everyone will say, "What the heck, I'll pay a bit and join the best..."

My opinion: DNforum.com should lower its PREMIUM membership fee to $19.95 per year.

From the management point of view: They may make less profit in the short term, but are assured plenty enough to be able to operate this site well. Moreover, the sooner this is done, the more certain it can be to eliminate the growth of competition. If however they wait a year or two---then DomainState.com or some other forum may become so successful, that then DNforum may continue to decline because there would then be little reason for anyone even to pay the $19.95.

From the members point of view: there is no question that a fee of $19.95 instead of $50 would very greatly increase the membership of this forum, and the long term survival of this forum, and therefore the value of belonging to this forum.

Case in point: NameSecure.com was once "the" place to buy "discount" domain registrations at $30/year. Then along came Dotster.com and others selling at $15/year. Nonetheless NameSecure "clung to its reputation" and continued at $30/year for several years. Then many loyal customers were driven away never to return, even after NameSecure finally reduced its rates to "market value." I must confess that I suspect something like this to be in store for DNforum.com.

"Membership here is definitely not worth $50 for the average person who only has a dozen or so domains to sell, or who just wants to buy an aftermarket domain for their own use at a reasonable price."

Is that the sort of person that the Platinum Membership is for? - I think not - such a person is not really a domain reseller and not who DNF was created for in my view.

"If DNforum.com does not lower its fees, eventually it may become obsolete."

Absolute nonsense!

There actually is a whole school of study correlating price and sales. And for some markets (or during certain phases of a market), lowering the price by 50% does NOT necessarily translate into even a 10% increase in sales.

That's a good point and may be the case. However, the opposite also may be the case. I suspect that when the prices of registering a domain name dropped from $30 to $15, the number of registrations increased not only double, but many times over.

I suspect that in this case, there will be an increase that could be anywhere from 10% to 100%. Perhaps more important however is the spiritual principle. People who are serious about registering domains do not want to pay $15 when they can pay $10, they do not want to pay $10 when they can pay $5.99.

...and when instead of paying $50/year, they can maintain 10-15 more domain names, they are going to think twice, especially if they feel such a fee is not really necessary to maintain the quality of this site.

I mean, how often do you hear a domaineer tellling you, "heck, I don't mind paying $30 instead of $15 to register a domain, it is well worth it..."

Well yes it is worth it but... I just can not agree with those who imply this is "the" attitude of a domaineer...

Let me also clarify that our Gold membership ($14.95/yr) might just be the right choice for that "average guy" you mentioned. He or she will then be able to:

a) sell his small collection by replying to "Domain Wanted" threads or

b) buy pre-owned domain names via our weekly live auctions or "Domains For Sale" threads

at what I'd call a reasonable price. ;)

Kristoph, you sound like a bright person however I feel you may be overthinking things a bit.
It takes a little bit to learn the ins and outs of the DNF but when you finally get the hang of this place it is worth ten times the membership fee.
Over the past couple of months I have moved thousands of dollars worth of domains both here in the "for sale" area and through private transactions with DNF members. I have received AWESOME advice with regard to purchasing 4 and 5 figure names and have set up a reseller site for the names I want to move none of this would have happened if i were not a member here.
My primary Internet businesses have grown by over 50% and much of that growth can be attributed to domains I have purchased here as well as the advice I have received.

Basically the cost of the membership is simply another cost of doing business.

Spending a lot of time here is a double edged sword. I spend time here looking for information which may help me aquire new domains however it is not hard to get sidetracked like I am now:laugh: but if you take a set amount of time each day and spend it here firing through threads you think may help you it will be time well spent.

Good luck with your names and if you have any relative to home and garden products or generic doms pm them to me!

Thank you for the tips, Togoodhlth & Nameslave. That does shed new light.

I guess that simply for selling domains, the ability to post ads does not help much here. It is for buying domains & leaning tips that platinum helps.

I.e., when buying domains, platinums can post "domain wanted" threads for a broader audience. Maybe I'll try it.

Hello,

Well for me dealing with domains is a hobby which I try to get into when I have some free time left in my busy schedule and I recently found dnforums through a web link, immediately got hooked up and became a plat. member. I am very happy to be here amongst the great minds of domain industry and I think it is well worth the 50 just to soak up the experience...

Regards,

Giant

Yo kristoph! Welcome to DNF!

In my opinion the Platnium membership is UNDERPRICED! There are many pay-to-participate websites that offer much less and charge more! As Allen (opportunitymagic) said, DNF helped SAVE his $7500.00 domain!

I have bought and sold many domains here and have had experienced only questionable transaction. I am a happy camper! :)

I did some of my "higher math", and a plat membership figures out to be:

$4.01 per month,
$0.96 per Week AND
$0.14 per DAY!

Incredibly CHEAP for all the opportunities and people that are available here!

I spend more than $50.00 taking my girlfriend to ONE movie! The main difference is here at DNF, you will never get screwed, LOL!

Peace,
WebCat

PS- Please PM me your list, I might buy some! And please keep us posted on your progress at Ebay, ok?
