And guess what... Google "site:.whatevernewgtld" and click on the first 10 links or whatever. 99.9999% of businesses have .whatever forwarding to the .com, .net, .org, or .cctld.....

Anyway, who cares? I'm not the one losing money nor making millions off these .whatevers, so have fun.....

Come on, it's early days, I'm playing devil's advocate here. If I was a local plumber looking for a web presence, especially outside the US, I'd be quite chuffed to put mytown.plumbing instead of somethingorother.co.uk on the back of my van. Not everyone goes first looking online for a plumber, but if you needed one and a friend mentioned the name to you because they'd seen it on a van and it was easy to remember, you might just take the trouble to look it up.

When the first new TLDs were introduced a decade ago, the proponents used to say the same thing, it's the early days, give it more time etc. Well you know the deal on that. Always the same old song.
The registration figures do not show a frenzy from end users either. If the rush is not happening now when interest, exposure and media buzz is at a climax, what can we expect later on ? Say, after the drops next year ?
I find it interesting that donuts are registering plenty of numeric domains in order to artificially inflate their zone counts. Low figures are painful because they offer a glimpse of reality (the lack of interest from end users). Not to mention that a lot of domains are inactive or passively used (ie redirects).

I do not believe for a minute that this is a fad or a just another of those "early failures" as pointed out.

The popularity is incredible at the moment.

One registry publishes their pre-reg data. This is ONE REGISTRY!

So, is early regs a key to predictable success???

It would be hard to quantify that question without ALL registries releasing their pre-reg numbers.

People are buying, but are they actually using the domains ?
Even .tel still has 140K regs, but that means nothing. .pro: 112K. Respectable figures, but these TLDs still enjoy zero traction from consumers.
One thing I have also noticed is that the TLDs tend to quickly plateau and then the number of registrations decreases sharply after a year or two as people begin to drop their useless domains en masse.
You will be dropping yours, you know it ;)
To me, it's history repeating itself on a larger scale.

Are people developing?

Yes...I am.

I have also noticed some very nice .bike sites.

Yet, market penetration is the key to market awareness, acceptance, and usage.

You shouldn't limit yourself to possibilities. What we do with our money is our own business.
Like ALL domains, they are regged and dropped or sold. Just like a freaking stock exchange. .pro is a bear, .com is saturated and a commodity while the new gtld are possibly bulls. It's a new ipo which has prospects. I ain't gonna wait for everyone in the mainstream to buy them. I'm going ahead of them.
No one is a fortune teller. It's always a gamble. If you think its a lousy investment then don't invest. Duh.

Well, I'm using gem.domains, thanks to an enterprising DNF member. OK, it's a bit incestuous, but so are the registries that auction the names they've previously sold.
