:undecided: HOUSTON (Reuters) - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district's superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt.

School exp More..erts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

"We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?" he said. "It's just common sense."

Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials, he said.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

The U.S. Congress once barred guns at schools nationwide, but the U.S. Supreme Court struck the law down, although state and local communities could adopt their own laws. Texas bars guns at schools without the school's permission.

One of the best ideas I have heard of in a while.

take this into consideration:

1. kids may take their parents guns from their home without their parent's permission and take it to school and use it in revenge or threat.

2. young'ins tend to take more power than the teacher in arguments. Teachers possessing guns would put "authority" back to teachers.

3. if my teacher had a gun when i was in school (in Texas), I would have been an honor student

Indeed :worried:

While I am in favor of gun ownership I don't like the idea of bringing them to schools at all. It's yet another overreaction.

There are other countries like Switzerland where gun ownership is prevalent and incidents are very rare. But in America there are just so many nuts who just cannot be trusted to own weapons

Its a great idea. Just think about what happened at Columbine....if the teachers were allowed to carry a gun on them it may have prevented the senseless murder that occurred there.

Texas should be the model for the whole country and the world.:approve::laser:

sdsinc, the nuts will get the guns no matter what. its like drugs, you think because they are illegal they are hard to get? when you make something illegal it only keeps it out of the hands of law abiding citizens and the point of the second amendment is that we have a right to protect ourselves and our children from such threats.

also I hightly doubt this is a first in the US. who are these 'experts'? I love it when newspapers say "experts say.." its a journalistic license to say just about anything. If the Congress once tried to bar guns from schools nationwide, that would seem to indicate it was formerly allowed, (and still is, provided your town or state hasnt adopted its own law against it)

also the report failed to say why the Supreme Court struck down congress proposed law.

This doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Allow students & teachers to carry guns to stop school shootings. :?:

There are a million reasons why this won't work and definitely won't catch on.

This can either be brilliant, or amazingly stupid.
Brilliant would be having the gun in a securely locked area (reinforced strontium locker for instance) that can only be accessed by the teachers (little RFID button or some crap for quick release).
Having it in a holster on the teacher's person is the amazingly stupid. How hard would it be for a student to actually get the gun of a teacher that's got it with them to look tough but aren't really able to pull a trigger?
How long till a teacher snaps and threatens a student with the gun? Or shoots a student? Or a parent?

What's needed is some sensible gun control. Not laws banning them, just sensible control... Like proof that you have a secured storage area, or are at least not intending on keeping them in a shoebox or on a coffee table.

Its a great idea. Just think about what happened at Columbine....if the teachers were allowed to carry a gun on them it may have prevented the senseless murder that occurred there.
Or maybe if parents actually had a gun locker and locked the bloody things it wouldn't have happened.

If you have children, and you have a gun, you should have a frickin locker.
It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure that out.

(yes, I wrote that on purpose)

This would never work.

The only solution is having a Security department or Police presence in the school.

Teachers can't be expected or trusted to carry a deadly weapon in schools.

This reminds me of the episode of "All in the Family" where Archie Bunker went on TV to present his plan for preventing skyjackings: "Arm the passengers!"

What a brilliant concept isn't it ?
But turning citizens into law enforcement officers is plain wrong.
Arming teachers will not stop a single shooter. On the other hand you can bet that a 'few' handguns will be stolen from teachers in the classrooms

Only in the U.S.A, so true... Here in Sweden we have very strict gun rules..

No school shootings ever happend here.. I cant imagine how it would feel if our teachers went to school with guns :disappointed:

I can't help but mention the recent stabbing incident in Manitoba...

True, but we can't forget about the recent school shooting in a Scandinavian country, in Finland.

You have got to be kidding!

How is that even remotely related to allowing teachers to carry guns at school?

Sure, a bad thing happened in Canada, but that is so far removed from insane gun laws that I hardly even know how to respond to this comment...

Not trying to offend anyone. :)

I wasn't comparing this incident to insane gun laws. My original post was that maybe this could have been prevented if the bus driver had a gun, which was meant to be a joke.

We need to train these teachers how to shoot a gun as well. We don't want them to take out the wrong kid.

This is a very important issue!
