Beatz, it's important to point:

If you think that something is stupid it doesn't mean it is stupid it only means that you think it's stupid.

Moreover, as we have seen majority have disagreed with you, I would reccommend you to stop making your claims continiously.

Actually i think it's funny that those posters destroy the more or less only chance they have (to be lucky to know about a dropping name that others might not know about) or are left with.

LOL

To go on with the "who's the wise guy" game:

Just because the majority thinks something is right, doesn't neccessarily mean they indeed are right.

Plus, what do you mean the majority has disagreed?
You still talking about that poll ?!

See - a majority would have been if like a 1000 members would have voted and if like 700 of those would have disagreed.

But how many was it again that voted at all?
14 ? 16? 34 ? I'm even to lazy to look it up.

But for sure those kind of numbers are not really what i would call a representing "majority".

Domain-Retriever, I do appreciate your comments and I understand your point. However, the intention is not to destroy the drop catching business, but to make it accessible for people other than those who catch 90% of the best names (and you all know who they are).

I'll find it for you. Your poll is a very good contribution to DNF, you should be proud.

http://www.dnforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27457

Current results:
17 - Yes, to forbid posting expiring names.
36 - No, go ahead and post away.

It is approaching 2 months for this poll, when do you think the result reflect the feelings of DNF members. Not everyone vote in government elections, but they still pick a winner.

The problem with your arguement of the poll not representing the "majority" is that I am 100% sure that you would be using it to support your case for the result had gone the other way.

It's already accessible. There are dozens of dropcatching services and ways to catch names. More than there ever have been at any time. There are more slots available at various places available than there are names to chase.

If you want to do something useful, start a .org dropcatching service. There is a small opening in the market for that. At least until we find out whether .org will switch to a uniform drop time when they institute rgp.

.

sorry to say this to you, but if "free" and "open source" is your
thing then you need to get out of this business. making scripts open
source, especially drop scripts, will destroy the domain
business completely.

best of luck with your idea.

It will only destroy it for the 12 know it alls and the big shots. . IT levels the playing field for everyoine else. However. You failed to mention a very important ingrediant. Bandwidth. Ult, Buydomains, snapnames and NW would all be virtually useless if they didn't have mega allotments of bandwidth to tap into the Dns rootservers at drop times. Your script needs bandwidth to function, and there are limits set because of the chaos of the past. You need to make multiple queries, literally tens of thousands per minute, for a small list of domains. A superscript is only going to be as effective as the bandwidth available. Did I mention that it is expensive?

I mentioned the only thing that would matter if such an
idea was to come into existence. This idea is flawed, and
one could go on and on forever talking about various problems
encountered throughout the project (bandwidth, resources, etc).

It will only destroy it for the 12 know it alls and the big shots. . IT levels the playing field for everyoine else.

It doesn't "LEVEL THE FIELD", it screws up the little organization
we have so far. Ok, so you're pissed off because the big shots
get all the good names, BUT the two top heads get them
for YOU (SnapNames, NameWinner). So, there are at LEAST two
organizations which capture domains for their CLIENTS, and
they're pretty damn good at it.

Now imagine if instead of two, there would be twenty thousand
or more of these companies. What if everyone in the domain
business had the same drop script and the same resources.
Do you think you would EVER capture the name you're
gunning for when thousands of other people have the same
resources (scripts) as you and they’re trying to get the same
name?

Let's be realistic for a second and use our brains, since when
does creating more competition (creating a open source drop
script=creating more competition) result in a higher catch
success rate for an individual?

One can argue this idea in a million different ways, but I'm just
sticking to the main problem, competition and information.

Finally, this would never work because the few people that
actually know the drop business in and out, would NEVER share
that information. Why would they? To create more competition?
To drive themselves out of business?

You are hugely overestimating bandwidth usage. You don't need "mega allotments" of bandwidth, and DNS root servers have nothing to do with registering domains. The most important ingredient is a registry connection.

I agree with Domain-Retriever.

Having ideas are good, but not when there bad. (Remember I said that.) :)

Perhaps I should have stated mega percentages of the allotted bandwidth? I do recall that Icann placed limits on simultaneous connections because the dns came close to crashing several times because of all the scripts running. Isn't that why snapnames , ult etc.... lease connections from various registrars ? For the bandwidth. I admittedly am not an expert at this but it seems that the scripts do need fast, simultanoeus connections to be consistantly effective. Catching a couple names out of a thousand, or only names that don't have a lot of demand isn't effective. Snapnames uses a dozen or more registrars connections. Why would they do this if they didn't need the bandwidth? Or did I misread something? Believe me , I am grateful for snapnames and namewinner. Many of us would have nada if not for these services. But lets face it, the comp is propagating. ANd if and when WLS takes place, god knows where the small guy stands. It all boils down to money, resources. Most one worders, high keywowrders, 2 and 3 character names are snapped. Is this because people are betting on WLS? I tell ya, It seems if you take a week vacation and come back you missed something big.

If you don't have a plan, you plan to fail. Remember I said that. : )

Yes, it will work, if the participants are prepared to organize it with the same rigor as a new business --with a business plan, incorporation, team, and financing.

If it is just a bunch of bright folks with a pipe dream, nothing will happen, or it will go a little ways and then degenerate into a turf battle, before it fizzles out.

Recent example: dnsnap.com released a product that for $69 allows you to attempt to register domains at eNom two times per second.

The result? Lots of people buy it, eNom gets pounded with requests and drops the allowed check rate to once every 1.5 seconds, and now it's once every 10 seconds.

The winners? The guys who sold a script for $69 and made a quick buck.

The losers? The people trying to grab names at eNom, because now Ult and BD will beat you every time. No doubt it also dilutes the power of eNom Club Drop.

The moral? The pool is only so big. You can make it a free-for-all, but it will dilute the free-for-all members chances.

spietreser, The REAL way to win?

The REAL way to spread the wealth ?

Would simply be an investment group.
Shares of the group.

The "Group" simply by passes even the largestdrop catchers.

The group simply simply offers premiums for names nearing expiration.

why pay 2K at namewinner, or buy hundreds of snaps, when you can simply purchase a 2K name for $200 from the current registrant ?

The investment group needs to be no larger than your own account, or the backbone of hundreds of shareholders.

Beachie, this is the same exact scenario as the Yamoz script
which destroyed the once rare Yahoo/Dmoz domain business.

Free is good, but it comes at a price. In other words, there ain't
no such thing as free.
