I think .com will survive and continue to thrive. It seems like everyone is giving into the hype of this news, but I don't think it will be as revolutionary as some are saying.

People think an address like u2.itunes will be huge, but for years you've been able to have u2.itunes.com and that hasn't really caught on...

In fact, it is even possible you can omit the www alltogether and simply type just plain Coke and it could resolve, by using wildcard dns server setup. That means it may be possible for you to typein coke with nothing in front or behind and I believe it may work, again depending on the server setup! How cool would that be as far as popularity goes!

Actually, you don't even need a wildcard for that to work. Just a simple A record would work. The problem is browsers make assumptions if you don't type in a dot, so "coke" already becomes www.coke.com. You'd have to type in "coke." with the dot at the end to refer to the TLD, since technically all host names end with a dot.

lol, amazed how many even experienced domainers buying into this.
is a bad idea, just because they have dreamed this up doesnt mean it will work or be continued. theres often changes at the top when things go tits up.

any companies that do buy into it will get zero penetration anyway, like most of the hundreds of irrelevant tlds.

it could work for .msn, .google etc if they chose, but they can make anything work if they want and promote

An Auction is the least of your worries. ICANNs fees are likely to be $100K. Your own costs could be even higher. I think you would have to prove that you have general support of all your name sakes in order to get approval.

The ramifications of this move are unprecedented. One thing for sure, the purported high entry fee to this game is not fixated anyway, so wouldn't you think ICANN will do whatever it takes to maximize its market penetration? They will finetune it, by lowering or raising the entry fee, to achieve the highest possible ROI, laughing all the way to the bank.

On a serious note, people are conservative by their nature, .com is the default extension for everyone and it would take lots of effort for a company to convince people to go to some weird domain like Nike.shoes.

I totally understand why those who have a vested interest in the .com space are attempting to dismiss or minimize the impact of a wide open TLD universe. That being said I believe many are deluding themselves. This will absolutely change everything and I am now looking at fetching the best prices I can for my existing .coms (Offers welcome).

I would also suggest that the really big domainers may publicly express a so what attitude while forming coalitions to pool funds to capitalize on the next Internet goldrush.

In case some are caught sleeping, I want to make sure you all have fair warning. This is the early nineties all over again folks. Save your pennies and get your own tld because you will in a short period of time be typing in mydotcomisworthsquat.google in order to get a true value on your domain names.

I would prefer to own realestate.com over .realestate, this isn't the nineties again. The person that buys .realestate will not have one visitor until they spend money on advertisemets to tell people that they exist like .com has done the world over and billions of dollars later. So while the owner of .realestate spends millions, the owner of realestate.com rakes in millions on traffic with not one penny of advertising dollars spent.

If everyone owns their own tld they everyone will advertise their own tld space not someone else's so your tld will NEVER seen the money spent that .com has because it's been a collective effort of every major company in the world to advertise their .com. If .ebay is out there .yahoo is not going to send people to .ebay. See, less effort, less money, more confusion. All of this is bound to create some opportunities but if you drop your .com because of this your a silly person. No one will advertise your tld but IBM,Yahoo,ebay, Microsoft, etc... has already advertised the world's namespace which is and will remain .com.

Brandable .com's will gain more importance in regard to generic .com's IMO

In absolute terms the .com namespace still will rule, but the playing field of generics, where most domainers have placed their bets now, will level out to more extensions.

Ha, I bet you are someone who owns a few shitty domains and would like to see the 90s all over again because you currently have nothing. There are tons of extentions already out there and most are just a blip on the radar. I can't see why this would be much different.

Yes, everyone wants the 90's again. Ask anyone, outside of here, the average Joe, if they ever heard of .coop, .aero, .travel, .pro, etc.... Now, I like .pro and some others but it doesn't mean jack because no one knows they exist and I surely don't have the budget to promote them. Now, save your pennies and buy a really sweet .com, you won't regret it.

Yes, some tld's are limited because of the restricted space but it wouldn't matter, they will take forever to permeate the market. Have you ever seen a .travel shown in a movie? How about .com? How about every movie. I don't want to rob anyone from the excitement of this new ICANN venture but I think we should all temper our enthusiasm with some reality and not lead each other astray. I too am excited to see what's going to happen but over the years I have learned, the hard way and through too much lost money, that .com rules.

Would you rather have wxyz.com or wxyz.e ?
Most quality .com's will retain or improve their value. But short domain investors might at least partially have a difficult time to reassess their business assets, thinking it all over again.
But I agree at the end of the day .com rules.
