One for the experienced members, those whom have been in this business over a year.

What's the one piece of advice you wished someone had given you when you started out?

Something you either learned the hard way, or someone told you too late, or you are amazed you went so long without realizing __________, or you wished you had read a certain "book/article" before you spent your first dime. Stuff like that.

Have fun with it.

Just recently passed 1 year :)

.net overvalued

.info, undervalued.

Don't pass up on .info

However COM will always be King.

But behind every strong man theres a strong woman
.com and .info :)

Best,

.net undervalued? I can't give .net's away!

Advice... don't waste your time going through the lists everyday because snapnames sucks now. (I wasn't around when snap was almost a given). :-(

Start slowly. Develop a system and test your system well before jumping in. Focus and stick with what you know. Don't get emotionally attached to a domain - its a business and you should be in it for profit, this means knowing when to cut your losses.

If you don't do these things, you risk overspending and working more just to break even.

I wish I would've listened to my own advice back in 95. I thought about registering a certain domain name, but at the last minute I decided to buy new rollerblades. Errrr

btw, I've sold many .net's.

Don't spend $70 on crap domains at NSI.

Now that is a piece of advice I followed and regret now. When they first started charging (I think it was $50) for domains, I let a few drop that of course I would have been better off keeping. At the time though $50 was a lot of money to me.

Yes, but it was actually $100 upfront, for a minimum of 2 years' registration. Later it was changed to $70 (i.e. $35 per year). I remember picking up some 30 expired domains one morning, totally more than $2,000!

You can be sued for infringing common law trademarks as well as registered trademarks, and judges may not be familiar with trademark law, and judges may care more about appearance than fact or law, and judges may hate small entity domain owners, and don't pick a fight with the biggest kid in town, and legal battles are extremely costly, and politics is a huge part of the legal system, and adversaries may seek to dig dirt on you, and if you do get sued you need to answer the complaint promptly, and answers can be amended later.

Just because you think the name you registered or caught is worth something doesn't mean anyone else will!

Never Stop Buying - Our Corportation started buying domains in 1993 and have never stopped buying every day since then. One - two - ten a day, everyday - At the end you will be surprised at the collection you have put together. Steve

unless you have lots of extra time and money to spare, focus your resources on a niche, and establish yourself as the "expert" in that niche
