Peter at Succeedwiththis.com wrote an interesting articlewhere he lists the 30 most wasted domain names he could come up with. As we all know, domains are very precious assets. Millions of dollars are spent every year in domain auctions accross the world as the world starts to realize how valuable online property is.

I think this guy is missing the whole point, we park domains because we can't be bothered to develop them into sites :D

We are well aware if developed the income would be greater and the value would increase but that takes management time and resources... and his list of 30 most wanted domains... what bs, how is cool.com no1!!!!

cool.com is a fav because he turned down an offer long time ago.
article here: http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-519606.html

My favorite quote from that article:

"A million dollars is not a whole lot lot these days."

That was back in 2000. I guess a cool million is practically chump change in 2007, eh?

Interesting how the term "wasted" is frequently used to describe parked domains. Goes to show that a lot of people still feel strongly that a parked domain is not being used to its fullest potential: a developed website featuring regularly updated relevent content or products/services available for purchase.

I say to those users who complain about parked domains -- what's one more click of the mouse to get to the relevant content you're looking for?

One more click!

Parked domains - properly optimized, of course - display ads intended to help users find what they're looking for. Click on an ad and that user will likely get to some relevant content or the products/services being sought. Just because the domain owner didn't actually "develop" the name doesn't mean users won't find what they expect to find. But some people complain that a domain is "wasted" because it's parked and not properly "developed".

As someone here already pointed out, if the domain is earning money for the owner, great! I'm pretty sure the owner doesn't think the domain is being "wasted" when those parking payments come in each month!

Parking is a totally legitimate and potentially profitable use of a domain name! But if someone thinks they can put a particular domain to "better use", let them put their money where their mouth is.

17) Cloth.com / 18) Clothing.com ? Clothing is good but cloth??? I own Clths dot com and would be happy to let it go for a lot less than a million. At anyrate some of the names on the list are indeed great but who is to say the $$$$$ they are earning by being parked pages instead of sites????

A rubbish argument for 'wasted domains' IMHO. I think parked pages often provide a better service for the user than a developed site. I don't like the idea that if you have a great domain you 'owe it to the world' to develop it into a huge site...

And those premium generics cost a lot of money to develop and attract traffic from scratch. I have some primes now that I just mess with but am looking for the capital appreciation route three years down the line.

most likely the owners are just waiting for the best offer to come in big millions. Why to spend time to develop them; moreover, potential buyers might want to develop them into specific webpages and wouldn't like if they are already developed, fully-functioning webpages...I rest my case. :)

I am sure that the owners of all of those names are being bombarded with offers to buy. They are all just waiting for the right price. Everybody has one.

craiglist.org (60504 with ext) should be in there - approx ¼ of the real sites score.

Owned by craigslist.org but not redirected. Think of all that wasted traffic. Pure stupidity when you consider it would only take a few seconds to rectify .

This was a good idea for an article. I disagree with many here, when you have an asset with such large potential value, the opportunity cost of not developing it probably outweighs the opportunity cost of ones time. Especially when development can be relatively cheaply outsourced these days. You maximize the value of your asset and with it you increase future sales value.

Ok, so check it out... assurance.com, exchanger.com/net, reactors.com, qaqc.com, chiko.com, etc. WHO develops cheap to make MONEY???? I've asked a hundred times from one on one meetings in houston with SEO "gurus" (more like dipshits sprinkled with a thesaurus), this site, etc. Best option has been to park. I'll pay $$$$$$$$$$$$ to have one of these developed out of sight (site???). Is it a secret?

Another waste of traffic that is very common: not setting a CNAME for www.
There are a LOT of domains which do not work without the leading www, or worse display a different (placeholder) page.
It's amazing how often this mistake occurs and I am talking about big sites
