How do people go about finding type-in domains for countries that do not have the availability of an ovt score? For example, how would you find .cn or .ru type-in domains?

You might want to look at those countries and see what they use for search engines. I am not sure if you are joking or not, but Ovt is not the only way to find this. Baidu and Yandex are places to start.

Also, before you go out and register names, you really need to get advice on the domains. Reg them at DynaDot or any other registrar that allows a refund after a certain number of days. Then, get advice from native speakers and/or other IDNers.

You will waste a lot of time and money if you don't speak the language and you do not ask for help.

Bear in mind that many potentially great future type-in domains are not currently type-in domains. A few important things need to happen first like IE7 deployment in Asia, adoption of IDNs by end users, corporates and ad agencies. So this is still adventure and speculation, you aren't going to get anyone to sell quality to you for a multiple at this stage and so will have to find another valuation method.

Russian (Cyrillic) domains get plenty of type-in traffic. Chinese and Japanese will get little right now. Don't expect to get rich overnight for many reasons. If you do, though, good for you!

This is speculative investing, but investing in foreign language domains makes sense to me. Ask for help, or you'll make the same bonehead mistakes that I made!

If you lack anything better maybe you can use the US OVT tool. But in several markets you have the benefit of the local OVT tool so you should most definitely use that or you will miss a lot of opportunity.
