WASHINGTON -- U.S. oversight of the Internet could end if the Department of Commerce approves an agreement to extend a California company's control of the ".com" infrastructure, said the leader of a local domain-name registration company.

The proposed agreement between VeriSign Inc. and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) would hinder competition, raise prices for consumers and give foreign leaders the emotional cause they need to wrest away the U.S. government's oversight role of Internet regulation, said Champ Mitchell, chairman and chief executive officer of Network Solutions, a Herndon domain-name registration and Web services company.

See anything "interesting" about the part I quoted? :-D

US Governance of the Internet is Ultimately a totally untenable situation.
I am not sure that this issue will have much of an impact in the International Arena as the US scooped most of the Dot Com market anyway.

The issue that is putting the most pressure on the existing system is IDN. If the US wants to keep everyone happy for another 4 or 5 years, which is frankly about the maximum amount of time it has got anyway, then immediately roll out of IE 7.0 and immediate implementation of DName Aliasing for IDN.IDN is about its best hope. This will have most of their influential detractors more than pleased for the time being.

Yeah, wasn't so long ago that Verislime and Networksolutions were one and the same. Also thought Verislime still owned a piece? So what's interesting is this is the first time I've seen Netsol go against it's former owner and possible current part owner.

Of course it's all babble on the part of special interest companies in this self-regulated no rules wildwest industry.:lalala:

"There is currently a debate running about the legality of a proposed deal between ICANN and VeriSign.

The deal could allow verisign to raise the fees on .com domain names by up to 7% a year for 4 years, they would not need to improve their service or justify the increase in fees in any way whatsoever. Companies that sell domain names to consumers are unhappy about the increase in fees.

However, the increase only amounts to an extra cost of $1.86 per domain per year, and if the deal is approved it wont take hold until 2012."

Anyone ever heard of CPI?

Don't worry about anything except acquiring great names. Everything else will play out the way it plays out. Great names will be standing at the end...like they always are.
