:yuck:

I paid £4.68 (2 year period) for a .co.uk approx 2 years ago through 1and1.

Yesterday I recieved a renewal Notification by post from NominetUK and guess what...

They are now quoting a renewal charge of £90.00 for 2 years. :greenupsetw:

They still want me to go through the Registrar, so its not a scam from a third party.

What the F#%k is going on?

Why are they so GREEEDY ???

Not only this, they also charge a transfer of domain fee of approx £35.00.

A load of B*LL*CKS if you ask me.

What are everyones views on this one... Please discuss.

The transfer charge involves (or should do) greater security checks... I understand they are looking into this issue, don't hold your breath..

On the issue of £90, I think you need to understand the system first before shouting.... that is a direct renewal charge, not the renewal charge with your registra ........ There will be no discount for membership, or being a tag holder...

Why dont you try to renew thought the 1and1 members area and see if the
price is different, i remembered doing this before when for some reason
NominetUK sent me a renew fee for £90 for a domian i had at 123-reg and i just paid
the normal renew fee not the £90.

Chris

This is standard from nominet. It will tell you on the letter you do not need to renew direct with them and it will also say that the price will likely be a lot cheaper to renew using your registrar.

Thanks guys, maybe I just jumped the gun. I'll try through my Registrar.

And thanks for the latest updates regarding Transfer Fee.

Definitely jumped the gun there I'd say. Nominet are very efficient I have always found - they charge (nominal) fees for transfers/registrar transfers - and as has been correctly identified above these have recently been reduced to a fraction of what they were previously charging (now £10 + VAT for transfers and £22 for bulk transfers) - much less than you'd usually have to pay to recover a domain that someone had intercepted in transfer.

The extra procedures that they proscribe ensure that basically it is very difficult for anyone to rob you of a .uk domain, something that I see being complained about here very very often - you can't just "push" these domains to other owners then suddenly discover they have been registered to someone else, they require an actual physical form to be filled in by both parties and signed and returned with confirmation of agreement to the transfer. Might make it a bit more longwinded, but is in everybody's interest in my opinion! They are also very helpful whenever I have had cause to speak to them.

Honestly, I don't work for them!

And yes the high renewal fee would be for renewing directly with Nominet rather than going through your usual registrar. Registrars who register as members and tagholders with Nominet get massively reduced rates which encourages people NOT to use Nominet directly.
