IMO, appraisals are Useless! A domain is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. It all depends on the domain owner. If they will sell simply because they can turn a profit, is normally what happens. Does this set "reseller" prices? Many sell, because they Need money etc. Again, this should not set the market. They could sell for that price one day, and the very next day, again turn a profit. So what reseller price do you pick then? The first one or the second.. That kind of thing happens daily. That is mostly the truth when it comes to appraising for end users. Us, as domainers, have a basic minimum pricing for certain types of names, like VCVC.com - based on certain factors, we give an idea of what the reseller price is, which usually isn't that inaccurate. However, there are really three types of prices:
- Reseller
- Reseller paying between reseller and end user being motivated to sell to end user
- End user
We just focus on #1 too much.
In cases like uNet.com it can be two things. One, the first offer came in that high. Or the owner of Unet simply made it appear like it had to be an High offer for him to sell, or he simply would not sell. If the buyer REALLY wants the domain, the price can go Really high and in this case did. Just like iReport.com sale of 3/4's of a million! CNN started branding the name already and trying to keep up with FOX's uReport etc they needed the domain. Would the domain be worth much if this was not the case? No. The fact is, CNN wanted it and Rick knew this. I'm sure CNN just kept coming back with offers, until Rick figured that was the highest they would and he sold.
