That is mostly the truth when it comes to appraising for end users. Us, as domainers, have a basic minimum pricing for certain types of names, like VCVC.com - based on certain factors, we give an idea of what the reseller price is, which usually isn't that inaccurate. However, there are really three types of prices:

- Reseller
- Reseller paying between reseller and end user being motivated to sell to end user
- End user

We just focus on #1 too much.
IMO, appraisals are Useless! A domain is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. It all depends on the domain owner. If they will sell simply because they can turn a profit, is normally what happens. Does this set "reseller" prices? Many sell, because they Need money etc. Again, this should not set the market. They could sell for that price one day, and the very next day, again turn a profit. So what reseller price do you pick then? The first one or the second.. That kind of thing happens daily.

In cases like uNet.com it can be two things. One, the first offer came in that high. Or the owner of Unet simply made it appear like it had to be an High offer for him to sell, or he simply would not sell. If the buyer REALLY wants the domain, the price can go Really high and in this case did. Just like iReport.com sale of 3/4's of a million! CNN started branding the name already and trying to keep up with FOX's uReport etc they needed the domain. Would the domain be worth much if this was not the case? No. The fact is, CNN wanted it and Rick knew this. I'm sure CNN just kept coming back with offers, until Rick figured that was the highest they would and he sold.

Thanks all! Appreciate it.

Well Predator, I wish I had this secret to negotiating that I could share, but the truth is, this was just a very motivated end-user. In fact, he only made one bid, and that was 100k. Most will think I should have countered, being that it was his first offer, but with Sedo it is a risky situation allowing yourself to ask for to much since you may never hear from the buyer again.

Bottom line: I was happy with the offered amount and accepted.

I paid in the low five figures for the name. Not many would have paid what I did based off of the appraisals I got.

Congrats! I blogged about this sale earlier today, I hope it`s ok.

Since Sedo`s max price for listings is $10,000 , was it listed as "make offer" ?

and he just shot $100K ??

Who is this enduser, I did not check the whois yet.

Thanks

I'm not disputing how good appraisals are here, I am just saying there are three different basic pricing categories. In my opinion, market prices are set in different ways. For reseller, there is always a minimum value of a domain based on its characteristics. Reseller value is just an idea to guide domainers who want to sell domains quickly to other resellers for minor profit. While the middle sale to someone who will find an end user is not as common, and pricing it is definitely hard to do, it does happen, and did in this case. End user prices are not easy to appraise, and truth be told, no one can accurately appraise a domain at the price an end user will pay. iReport sold for a nice chunk of change, and I think Rick made a good decision on when to sell because if he tried to push for more, they may have just gave up and started chasing a new name.

No, not at all really. I was happy with the sale. I purchased the name from the original owner/registrant and sold it for 5 times what I bought it for 4 days later.

But I have to admit, when Giode told me about his sale a few weeks ago, I regret that I didn't sit on the name longer. :)

100k for unet.com seems like an AMAZING price

Is there a business model behind that purchase or is this a pure Mo-Mo play?

Derek, just one question: have you ever bought lottery tickets, if not you should try :p

Congrats! Happy to see you pull off one big sale after another :)

Btw, did you advertise the domain somehow, or just got the offer out of the blue?

As we know, appraisals are not everything, and it seems you should agree with me as we have 3 different types of pricing (reseller, between, end user). You paid in between, knowing this name has great potential for selling to an end user, you researched it, and decided it is worth the risk. You turned in a massive 400-500% profit, and respected that was enough and chose not to risk it any more. It was a wise professional decision, right from the purchase to the sale, as greed can lead to failure.

Congrats mate ;)

Getting an appraisal on one of the various domain forums is fun, and entertaining. It's not gospel though. This isn't the first name I have had appraised here, that has ended up selling for a much greater amount. Nothing wrong with these appraisals, and everyone simply shares what the name is worth to them...period.

To be honest, I really did buy this name for it's huge development potential. I didn't foresee flipping it so soon.

wow.
thanks dude

i agree with the countering thing.
i bet u thought was a hoax first?
congrats on the sale. awesome

now, if you're not in a hotel room with some hookers with the sale proceeds, u need a new agent

my rates are good

cheers
Pred

Thanks Predator!

Actually, I was worried for about a week, where Sedo emailed me to say they were unable to communicate with the buyer. So nothing really happened. After that though, I saw in the transaction notes that the buyer had paid Sedo in full, and it was a big relief.

Congrats! I blogged about this sale earlier today, I hope it`s ok.

No problem! Feel free.

Not sure what the plan is for the name. When you make this type of investment, it is worth paying attention to. Well see what they build it into.

Hi Michael.

It's been a good year no doubt! It was looking like I may have to sell one of my domains, so I sent inquiries to about 200 possible end-users for unet.com. I don't think I emailed the company who ended up buying the name, however.

Other than that, it was out of the blue one night at 2am.

Appreciate it NetworkMsia!

Not at all surprised at that price. Brilliant buy and sell by Giode. Have a similar domain, unbiz.com, and it goes ping ping ping all the time. I can only imagine what the CPC on unet.com optimized would be. Not to mention the development potential to a corporate end user.

I think it has more to do with the particular letter combination than the fact that it is LLLL.com. Again, congrats on a spectacular sale!
