That is nothing compared to a site I found whilst on the trail of the scammers involved in the theft of mine and other members domains from DP. I came across a site that had over 200 geniune American CC accounts both Visa and Mastercard giving names, gender, address, dob, mothers maiden names, social security #'s, Card #'s, Expiry dates, and card security #'s. This site is some sort of Arabic forum and whoever had access to the site had carte blanche to do whatever they wished with this information. I reported it to the FBI but never heard back from them.

Patrick Norman where are you?

You have not visited or posted recently here and we miss your antics.

We've got a hunch your reading this thread, but you're perhaps too embarrassed to post anything here. What a shame!

I'll make you a deal Mr. Norman. If you post an update with information related to your alleged accomplices and provide additional contact information them, I will ship you over 4,000 Pokemon cards that I scammed from someone on Craigslist. All I would need is a good shipping address.

There's no reason to run and hide Patrick. We already know a great deal about you and your dirty deals. We just want to know that you are still alive and breathing.

It's your call.

These cards are pretty hot!!!

security tip for people running Windows or Linux - you can download the VMware player here -> http://vmware.com/download/player/

and then install VMware's "Secure Browser Appliance" -> http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/browserapp.html

any browser exploit you might still run into will then be compartmentalized in your "virtual machine" environment

it's not foolproof, but a good first step to raise your operating environment above the "low hanging fruit" level.

Speaking of low-hanging fruit .... having spent some time wading through the gutter of 9mm's alter-egos' posting history on DP - one of the threads that came up involved a really charming blackmail shakedown attempt ->

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?p=6089115#post6089115

just a little window into how our little friend is inclined to operate behind the scenes. At this point it should be obvious that he fits the profile of a classic grifter - ie, a sociopathic con artist skilled at manipulating victims, with natural talent for making "friends" quickly - and then burning them. So keep this in mind if you might tend to be sympathetic to "the poor kid who didn't know what he was doing and got mixed up with a bad crowd" - your sympathy is part of the game.

while most the visible focus in this thread is on "the Sudbury connection" - sucking up hundreds of hours of time from all of us following the details - anyone paying attention should realize that 9mm is probably just the tiny tip of the iceberg relative to the other players involved in this current debacle. And likely the weakest link for getting leads on the rest of the ring - would be best if a push can be made for law enforcement to get him into ("protective") custody ASAP.

IMO, quite likely will be counterproductive for people to reveal too much more info or suggestions for the public record beyond that in this thread - maybe best to PM TheLegendaryJP if you've got something useful to add, and let him decide what will or won't be helpful to make public.

Lotta popcorn for the peanut gallery here (and that's where I'm sitting) - but obviously serious money problems on the line for the victims - and corresponding jail time for the scammers - so should try to keep in mind that this online drama can easily translate into a real-world "life and death" scenario ....

I'm thinking socially engineered - phished

or

maybe brute force - cracked?

Yeah it's rediculous. I must get an email a month from 'PayPal' telling me my account has been frozen and to login in via the provided link. I bet LOADS of people follow the instructions on the email.

Funny thing is the links aren't even well disguised most of the time, just have the main site's name in from of the PayPal address. I guess some people just are that stupid/ignorant. (no offence anyone who regularly clicks on links in emails)

We might actually be onto something here... If you carefully read his (supposedly his) shakedown attempt over at Digital Point, assuming it's all true, there are actually some pretty disturbing things to read in there...

Just in case it "goes down", here's a copy of it... If you can afford the time, I suggest you read it all.

There's more to that, but this should do for now. As you can see, there's no way to tell how many of these characters are out there, it almost seems like every stupid kid (or "no kid" for that matter) with some spare time (and obviously unfit parents) can do it... and not just that they can, but they actually seem to be doing it on regular basis!

I for one am very aware of the endless possibilities and ways of how to carry out these scams... I know it's really not that hard, and even if you don't have any resources (read: cash), all you need is a list of a few Paypal addresses to start off. Regular PayPal Joe and PayPal Jane just aren't computer savvy enough for scum like that not to take advantage of.

Anyway, most of this is kids stuff, really easy to do, with no actual hacking involved. I just never thought there were actually people out there stupid enough to do this kind of s*** and think they can get away with it. Then again, seeing how they seem to be doing this on regular basis, and we barely ever hear about it (just like we sure as hell wouldn't hear about it this time, were we also not in this business and indirectly involved ourselves), maybe I'm the one who is stupid for thinking authorities would actually care enough to stop them. Internet fraud seems to have become a heaven for scammers... after all, there are too many variables involved when doing it in "real life" and unlike on the internet, somebody might actually care enough to stop them...

Here is the orginal thread, there's some convo with the scammer and 9MM in it. If you read the post you should also check out the thread.

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=650303&page=2

For those that don't know, 9MM is Crazy Domain Kid and aka LLLL(on dp)

The other guy is the hacker/scammer.

While all the hacking talk is important for us all to know let's keep this thready focused on this unresolved sale.

Perhaps someone can start another thread to discuss security threats?

Not sure what I should do with this info, wish I could figure out how I got into the root to get those files as there was so much more there as well. Maybe enought to nail these guys!

Phone register.com tonight and tell them they need to protect the individuals account right away. Give them the files too, they may need to protect themselves and domainers names.

I wouldnt give those files to anyone outside of the ones involved.

One more thing that you should frequently do to make sure you haven't got any sh*t installed on your computer, is to check all running processes (CTRL+ALT+DEL WinXP/Vista). Look up every process (google them) that you are not sure what is. If you see any weird process names, it might be spyware and you should consider getting it removed. ;)

I do this all the time. It's a method I give all my family and friends. Back in windows 95 and 98 I knew all the system files, and their sizes for the most part. Anytime I saw a change I investigated. In a dozen years I've run scans maybe 10 times, with adaware but only recently with this winxp. Too many files in the new OS to memorize like I used to. Nobody is allowed to mess with my business machine. I never allow activeX and never accept anything unknown. No free taskbars, I use my own proxies unless I'm here or other trusted places. Spyware can be good I'm sure, but they are only as good as what they've found. New stuff is developped all the time and unless you understad your machine your at risk.

One thing that sets alarms are slow speeds, cpu or connection. I do run a clean machine so if I get a suspisious hicup or lag, I do a quick check.

As for registrar account emails and accounts... Be unique with the pw, each registrar, forum, email has its own pvt pw. As well, your account on your login to manage domains should not be the same email in your whois. I feel very secure at moniker.com, I also know if anyone moves a pile from my account I will be notified. Moniker looks out for domainers.

as for keylogging in internet cafes and such.. i travel alot but am forced to login here and there. Its laborous but what I do for logins is open any page with alot of text, and i copy a group of letters/numbers and backspace leaving the character needed to complete my password entry. Its a real pain but it works. Also, if you know you wont need to login until you return to a safe machine, some places let you reset the pw on the fly. they send to your account email.

Good luck all, keep an open eye.

i wrote above, but cant edit: "Spyware can be good I'm sure" I meant Spyware Protection :)

---- We interupt this broadcast to bring you a not-so-important update ----

Regarding the phishing and PayPal hacking topics that were raised earlier, I want to share a website with you called the Anti-Phishing Workgroup. They are located in Redwood City, just south of San Francisco, and track Phishing trends that occur online. There is a lot of great information on the site and it may answer quite a few of your questions. You can also report phishing attempts to them.

Search the archives for recent PayPal phishing attempts as well as hundreds of others that are online.

Phishing and Crimeware Map

Phishing Archive

Hope this helps out some.

With almost 700 posts, it is not easy for other members to follow the story.

Please stay on the topic to make it easy to everyone.

I know you guys are famous of being off topic but this is the third reminder post!!!

Thanks,

One could make a "made for TV movie" out of this stuff. With Gilbert Godfrey playing the role of Patrick Norman.

Honestly, i'm very impressed at how the community has come together to help eachother. This is what community is truly about. Regardless of these peoples ages, they are certainly clever enough to have ripped off dozens, possibly hundreds of smart people.

I think they should be tried as such as well.

Just a heads up....I got the same and forwarded it to PP...they replied that under no circumstances to click on the link in the thread as it goes to a site that sticks you with a virus. A good virus scanner should pick it up but they are definitely going after the unsuspecting...or unprepared...

Well one time I got an email (long ago), that was an ebay phishing attempt, and the link was to some random domain like "happyjizen.com", so I checked the domain was available, so I toke it - and the next day I had 250 hits and no clicks on the ads
