I also think it was the U.S. Gov that put too many rules to get a .us for your company when the .com was much easier. For example if your company's name is xyz and your company was located in miami florida the only one they would let you buy was xyz.miami.fl.us. So no one wanted that and everyone went for a .com. If these rules were not there in the 1990's the .us would be much bigger today.
