"Earlier this year, VeriSign Registry announced that they would be raising prices for select domain name extensions. The price increase will go in to effect on July 1st, 2010. As a result of this price increase, eNom is in the unfortunate position of having to pass this price increase down through our Reseller channel. This notice is to inform you of the changes to our pricing Tiers.?"

Price from $7.95 to $8.50

We regret that we have to raise our prices as a result of VeriSign’s decision. It is our goal to continue to deliver extremely competitive domain name pricing complemented with quality value-added services to our customers, and we will continue to work hard to meet your needs.
===

I'm assuming this is across the board, what is the lowest registration Moniker can provide to resellers?

Regards,
Em

And the fee will keep on going up year after year, possibly at even higher percentage increases. Plus, I believe the registry has (or will soon have) open-ended power so it is real conceivable they will start tiered pricing based on the domain intrinsic value and traffic.

In other words lowqualitydomainname.com will be say $20-yr or so but topkeyworddomain.com could be 1k or even 10k plus a year. What if you refuse to pay 1k or whatever for a renewal. The registry will not care since they can turn around and resell the domain to someone else for the renewal price or even more.

This is all extremely negative to the domain industry and could easily cause its demise.

You have to wonder if there is anyway to challenge this general decision. I understand that Go Daddy wanted to charge just $2.50 for registrations and there were other companies competing too when ICANN decided to give a forever contract to Verisign. There won't be other chances for renewal of this contract in the future just minor 'reviews'. They can raise there rates three of evey five year review period and they can actually raise them in the other two as well. Why in the world would anyone with any impartiality at all have signed such a thing??!

Verisign, the .COM and .NET registry owner, and the sole (except for ICANN officials?? - either that or they are really, really stupid )just sold off their security division which they founded as a hedge in case domains failed as a major income stream after the .COM crash (remember that?) They have decided to concentrate exclusively on domains. One must wonder why they would do that! Registrations cost them 17 cents and they can raise the price till people scream. The answer (as it sort of is now with registrars) just let it expire and we'll sell it to someone else. They don't even have to advertise. Its a monopoly and it sucks for everybody and its just plain wrong too!

Businesses raise prices every year because the cost of doing business goes up. As long as it isn't excessive I don't have a problem with it.

The problem here is they are basically a monopoly.

And costs do not go up. If anything technology and bandwidth costs go down over time. Only their thoughtless spending goes up.

With economies of scale the average cost of domain names should be decreasing. The repeated, generous (+7%) hikes are a bonus to verisign's coffers, thanks to icann.

Agreed the 10% .com/.net VeriSign price increase sucks for all of us and is unfortunately out of all our control. I can only suggest that you (try) and renew all your domains prior to the price increase so it covers you for 1 year and then you won’t have to worry about the increase until next year.

Thanks!

Most of my valued domains were registered for 5 to 10 years already. But the problem is when you have 1000+ domains to maintain. I already started to drop some of them.

verisign is in the position of the casino: they always win no matter what.

I could no longer afford to keep 1000+ domains, especially with little or no revenue. I honestly don't see a justification in the increase in price, especially when the registry can be maintained cheaper. Prices should be going down not up.

Hi Bari, any discounts for bulk June renewals before the price increase, .com .org and .us in particular?

Verisign sold their certificate portion of the business to Symantec for $1.28 Billion
In other words, they don't need the money from the price increases, they only do it because they are allowed to as part of the contract.

A note about renewing multiple years in advance: you can only expense the current year, for tax purposes. So while it's tempting to renew several years, your savings will have to be allocated during the years of renewals you're paying for.

The cost of providing online service is going DOWN quickly, not up.

Thank you for letting me know, I greatly appreciate it.

I don't have a problem with the increase either, $55 more per year per 100 domains, I'll just pass it onto my customers.

It's because the domain registry business is more profitable for them than anything else they've touched in the past. It's lucrative enough for them to shift their focus to domains and make it their core business.
