Agree, the ongoing registry renewal fees are one of the reasons I am pruning my names to such a large degree and letting about 1/3 expire, possibly as much as 1/2 by next year.

With the price increase and time consuming maintanance it's becoming a liability more than an asset what with the dubious value of keeping domains which do not earn their keep.

Unquestionably the largest money making entity on a global scale that is totally unrequlated, uncontrolled, no oversight, an anything goes business model.

And guess what...we are feeding the whores

Well, the US Department of Commerce controlled the internet at one time. That's the government.

ICANN sures seems to act like a government bureaucracy most of the time.

Maybe the no bid indefinite monopoly deal with Verisign has created stability. But the high price of domain regs sure does suck.

You guys are splitting hairs. ICANN sure walks and quacks like a government agency. And I bet if the Chinese wanted to take it over, the US government would not be too pleased about that.

Hey they have to pay for the 20 junkets to exotic locations around the world somehow! Now they can do 30 per year!

They pay for that with the 17 cent 'ICANN fee' that you pay every time that you buy or renew most domain names. No sweat off of Verisign or the ever so humble and community oriented registrars.

You have got to wonder why a supposedly independent board has granted so many ridiculously profitable favors to Verisign and the registrars. If they are totally above board, they are the worst management body anywhere!

Verisign is raising the .COM & .NET prices on Jan. 15, 2012:

As you plan for your renewals, I wanted to make sure you're aware of the upcoming price changes for .COM and .NET domain names. On January 15, 2012, VeriSign, the registry for .COM and .NET, will increase prices: 7% for .COM and 10% for .NET.

Adam

So, if i register the domain now for the three years or more then it will not increase the hosting price in next year.

This news would make a lot of people to renew their domains now and it is very quick way for somebody to raise money ahead!

The more the fees go up, the more domains I drop, so I don,t care really, most of my domains are speculative and I have moved from com, over the past few years with my .ca variable, being more compelling to hold, as the generics are stronger in this tld.
