wowo...thanks doc.....i've always had DELL....and not many complaints...but then again...i have no idea as to what other brands are like.....i have a dell laptop now....i wanna stay away from laptops...i want to go back to desktop.....if not DELL....who is a great desktop brand?
Man, you're going to get me in trouble and start some wars...HP or Sony. Only two desktops I would consider. Unless we're talking Mac. But we're not.

I currently have 9 computers in the house (don't ask). Three HP laptops (one is always on the road), 4 HP desktops (will be donating two to a school), and 1 Sony Vaio desktop and 1 vaio laptop. All are wireless, many have specific secure and security needs for businesses. Two are Vista and the rest are XP (except for the one that I am going to upload all the Linux stuff in),

Unless we're talking Mac. But we're not.

I always custom-build my own desktops. Since the 286 era :D but for laptops, I would get an HP. Perhaps, even for desktops.

I have Vista Premium 32bit and it runs great. I am counting down the days until SP1 is released, but this was the same as when I got XP when it first came out.

I would sell my new Dell XPS any day and get a new Mac though with Leopard.

A friend showed me leopard yesterday and I'm really thinking hard about switching from custom builds (pc) to a mac.

Check it out takes about 10 mins for the whole video tour. But man, it's worth it.

Watch Leopard now

since they have bought Compaq and became a major force in the computer hardware industry, they started downgrading the quality of their products. It seems that they are better off replacing the faulty parts covered by the warranty, than investing in higher quality materials and construction.
The same goes for Acer.
I am definitely not a fan of Compaq, that is what led me to Sony which is quite awesome and reliable, although their desktops do lack some hookups for the real techie types.

And I understand Acer just bought out Gateway? Is that correct?

I have a good friend that had been waiting and waiting for Leopard. When I was in advertising, the only thing we used were Mac's.

He did get the new computer (laptop) that would do the dual OS (MS XP). He was not at all impressed with MS.

But donating 2 to a school for challenged students. Will be down to 7.

Some are dedicated solely for research and have sensitive data on them.

Perhaps 3 are used for pleasure. Currently at work so not a problem.

Just thinking...can I put the new Apple OS Leopard on an HP? It has no OS at present.

Tony, go with what you trust. If you trust Dell and have had no problems or issues, stick with Dell. If you are happy with XP, then stick with XP. You can always upgrade. Just make sure if you think you want to upgrade that whatever you buy has enough memory and the processor to handle it (dual core minimal...quad core processors on the way). Vista is a memory hog. So just keep that in mind.

NewEgg.com

check there resources and then take a look at the barebones systems and then the high end.

The race between intel and AMD procs are heatead, but intel seems to beat AMD right now.
AMD is working on a true quadcore unlike the piece-meal intel quad,
Things are really in flux right now in the tech market, but by Jun-July '08 we should see great prices on some really supped up technology.......

build a pc over at newegg and link it back here and get some feedback...?

Once the Quads hit the market, you'll see the duo processors drop in price big time, for a superb system.

I have some with AMD and some with INTEL. I am not a gamer, I do a lot of graphics, but I really see no difference.

No waiting needed. Already on the market.

If you are sold on Dell, that's the way to go. XP or Vista...your call. You can always upgrade. Just make sure the package you get can handle the upgrade.
