damn, I wanted to register microsoftwindowsisgay.com but I see NS have it now
I must object to this domain. Microsoft Windows is NOT gay. It just has a wide stance.
Anyway, I just checked 4 made-up domains (boxcarbaggage.com, unkleugly.com, nogglezone.com, slamdunkdonuts.com) on NSI (that were available a few minutes earlier), and now two of them are snagged by NSI (unkleugly.com, nogglezone.com).
Not to defend NSI - they can say that since you are checking a domain at NSI, they automatically reserve it for you, when you are ready to pay for it, and that since you are on their site, you'd be their customer anyway. This actually would have been good, if it had happened when I check a domain on another registrar, several months ago - and the domain was available and I put it in my shopping cart, and forgot to hit the "BUY" button. Then, by the next morning, the domain had been picked up by someone else. It was a good name that dropped the day before, so I'm sure my query was not monitored in order to grab the name.
I was surprised to see that Network Solutions is doing this, but everything started changing long ago.... Once NSI displayed the message that ".org" was only for non-profit organizations - then later promoted you to protect your brand, and grab all possible variations. Then registrars started offering backorder services, SnapNames changed their "flat-fee" pricing model, and so on. It's simply the domain market evolving, and for a long time, the people with the power (registrars) didn't start taking advantage of the situation until many have had the opportunity to made a lot of money and/or grab a lot of great domain names.
Whenever a new method is discovered to making money, you can be sure it will be fully exploited.
