Hey there,
I am fairly new in this type of industry.
Even though I bought many domains for the past year or so, It was strictly to build upon, so it really didn't matter to me if it was only worth the registration cost. Now I am seeing the potential of actually investing in domains and reselling them after I sold a domain of mine for $2K, which I thought was not really worth anything.

So here is my question, and I hope that I can get some constructive feedback. I am not expecting that anyone reveal their secrets on domaining but I would love to get some guidance on where to start as a domainer.

I have plenty of time to research, read and learn ... I'm just hoping I can get some help on where to start.

I mostly wanted to post something on here because of what I noticed in the past few weeks. I bought DRT last year and have been using it every month or so. It's a good little program, but here is my problem. It doesn't seem that I am quick enough to snatch the good domains. I know that most of those domains are probably in the aftermarket, bids, etc ... but damn ... there has to be a way for us little guys to enquire a quality domain at some point. This is where I need help/guidance.

Like I said I have no problem spending many hours researching and getting familiar with the industry but I have no idea where to start. Hopefully this forums is the right decision.

Thank you again in advance for all your help!

Denis

Welcome to DNF :)

getting good names on the drop = backorder + $$$$

list names for sale everwhere you can to get the most eyeballs looking for it. Sedo, Moniker, Afternic, Buydomains, TDNAM etc.

Congrats on your 2k sale btw

seems like you already KNEW how to ask "$2K" for a domain that you thought was worthless, so to me you're already ahead of some....coming out the gate!

i can tell you, that i've never used software to find names.

it comes mostly from reading, and finding "niche's".

if we all use the same soft to search, then we'd all probably come up with the same lists.

backorders, expiring lists get the most eyes.

aftermarket sales and forum posts get lots of eyes too.

buy what domains you can cheap, where you think their values will inflate.

stay keen on these areas..

technologies
slang
short domains
keyword domains

buy type-in traffic with revenue, to build income stream.

read the past....to know the future ;)

Good question Denis
Do you mean that you registered many domains for the past year or so, or do you mean that bought many domains from others?
Yes, there is a way little guys to acquire a quality domain at some point.

First, thanks to all the reply's!
I appreciate it!

biggedon, the only reason I got 2K for that domain is because of good timing and luck. But it made me appreciate the fact that I could possibly do more successful domaining.

I am sitting on a few good domains that I think might be worth something but I am going to evaluate the market and try to reach the right people I think. For example I have starzz.com. If you do some research it was the official WNBA Utah basketball team website at some point. It is also a nice typo for starz.com which has an alexa rank in the mid 40K. I guess I just need to reach out to the right people.

But anyways, keep the info coming and thank you for the warm welcome!

I mean both.
Not sure if 200 domains is lots, but I guess not really since lots of domainers have huge portfolios. Well it's is lots for me, hehe.

I basically registered 75% of my domains after finding them using DRT. And the other 25% was basically buying domains on eBay. DRT is perfect for what I need it for because I don't need to have any domains with traffic. As long as its a 2 dictionary word then it works fine for what I need it to do. I build turnkey websites and my clients pick a domain from my portfolio. I been doing that for years now and saw the potential of buying quality domains for investment purposes. SO that is wny I would like to purchase quality domains ... slowly build my portfolio.

I will certainly keep an eye open on here for good domains.
Thanks!

Hi.

You don't seem new at all.

Tell us more about how DRT works to find available two word domains. Does it use search data to find terms for instance?

Also tell us more about the mini-sites you put on your domains.

Sean.

I was referring to the thread starter infernostudio, not you.

He said this "....I would love to get some guidance on where to start as a domainer. I have plenty of time to research, read and learn ... I'm just hoping I can get some help on where to start."
