Hello,

newbie that I am, I try to make sense of all of it and try to figure out all factors that go into the value of a domain name. Here is what I know so far (somewhat in order of importance as I understand it now).

Economy...... How's the current state of the economy. Bad. That's bad :)

Market..........big markets (bank, industry),... is good. More buyers

Marketable...would you buy such a name yourself?

Resale.......... selling to a reseller or an end-user?

Appeal..........Does the name sound sexy, cool, peppy or boring...?

TLD............. .com .net .org .info .us seems to be the order

Length........ 2-3 is great, 5-6 is good, 10 is ok, more is getting worse

Hyphens...... bad like morning breath :)

Digits........... bad like a pimple :)

Nr.Words..... one word is best, 2 is average, 3 is lousy

generic........ Generic words are great, but brandable ones ok too

Google......... The more websites for the exact search term, the better.

Overture...... The more searches for the exact phrase the better

TypeIn..........If people actually type the name+.com in, that's great

Traffic........... Developed domains with traffic and an idea sell better

Luck............. If you find the perfect buyer, you get your $

Anything else that I forgot? Any comments to how heavy each factor should go into the calculation (maybe you split a pie of 100% into pieces...).

Thanks a lot for all your comments!

Warm greetings to all
Reinhard

p.s. Last question: Why is there a rule to only appraise registered names here? Wouldn't a section where newbies could get advice in PM's be a great thing and attract tons of new visitors to the forum? It would be a GREAT service to have my names doublechecked BEFORE I waste the reg-fee...
Comments to that? Thanks!

p.p.s. To make this thread a valid post, would you please appraise EastCoastLawyer.com Thank you!

Very important consideration is that the name should not violate
a registered trademark. Even if you are able to get CocaCola.com
will this name have any value for you ? Only your lawyer will make money !

Very, very interesting post! I learnt a lot from it!
You've listed some obvious factors that I over looked (I may even make a print, if you don't mind, for quick reference)
As you know, I'm new at this too, so I don't have any valuable input at this time.
The DN "EastCoastLawyer.com" would be priceless to an EastCoastLawyer, so perhaps develop it and go out and find one to sell it to!
good luck!
