What is the definition of a "premium" domain name? If price is a characteristic, what is the minimum price generally accepted as being "premium"?

This is my definition, others will have different definitions.

A premium domain is either a one word generic domain that in itself defines a business or service and is a category killer or a domain with substantial traffic to sustain a business without having to spend much on advertising.

As for price they range from 25k if you are lucky to 20 million.

"Premium" is highly subjective and will vary from person to person. A domain that I would consider a premium domain may not be a premium to someone else, and vice versa.

While some would be considered premium to most people (computers.com, cars.com, insurance.com, etc..) it's when you get into the grey area that people start to disagree.

As for price, I've gotten what I consider "premium" domains for a reg fee and/or a drop fee and as for how high, the sky is the limit (if there is a limit) - it all depends on the demand.

Based on your definition, it would seem most folks are "full of it", or at the very least overly optomistic when describing their domain as "Premium" then.

Not full of it, just perception and what you're looking for.

Sure, if someone lists xzztvgkjutse.info as a premium domain, they're full of it but adomain like computer-stands.com may not be a premium to most people, it clearly would be to someone who makes and/or sells computer stands.

Judge a domain on what you want and percieve in a domain, not what the seller sees it as. Sellers (in many industries) will make their product look like the best thing ever - just look at the Snuggie.

I would agree with this. Many that post premium are just junk.

Premium domains speak for themselves. They don't need the 'premium' label, which is the most distorted word on domain forums :)

Took the words out of my mouth.

If you need to say it's premium, it ain't premium. :)

A fancy restaurant doesn't need to call itself a fancy restaurant. If it really is fancy, that should be clear from the get-go.

a premium domain is one that is priced higher, than those that are within the same category

as the buyer could say they bought it at a "premium"

in that example, the premium domain may not be the the best in that category

another example of premium, where there are limited quanties of a group of domains

like nn.com/net/org or nnn.com .net and .org when there are only 100 or 1000 in existence

another example would be a word or phrase that describes a new idea or technology

and then there are the brandables.

imo...

I must say "Premium" can also be in the eye of one buyer...that is the beauty of domains...but for the most part I agree with what most have said in this thread if you are looking to define it. If you have to say why it is premium...it is not premium.
