pffftttt, want some cheese with that whine?

That'd be my response.
^^ Yeah that. =) Seriously, you were faster than him so it's not your fault. If he or she wanted this name so desperately then he should have registered it the moment he liked it. I would not waste my time on this person and just ignore the email. If he or she emails again, just blacklist him.

It's business -- nothing personal!

Delete the email, when someone wants something bad they will persist. In this case they will never write again.

I wrote back saying I'm keeping the name, and they should register another (like maybe the .net version). If it was a scam, great, if the guy was serious, he can just buy another name and lesson learned - buy the domain before you start building the site.

hugegrowth , well done !

99 % of the time you get one of these its a scam to cheat you out of a domain !

here is my email i got a few days ago :
-----------------------------------------------
Hello,

I planned one year ago to buy the domain name [generic 2 word product every household has].org but I waited for my website to be totally finished before buying it. And you were faster than me...

This domain name was still free a few month ago and I guess it's not a very requested domain so I wonder if maybe you would agree with leaving it to me...
Please.

Thanks for the attention you'll pay to my request.

Best Regards.
-----------------------------------------------

my answer :

Hello,

I am not interested in " leaving it to you "

best regards,
-----------------------------------------------
But you will never do anything with this domain !!!
Who do you think will buy you services for [generic 2 word product every household has].org ?!?
There's no commercial interest in this domain name at all, only one entreprise is called [generic 2 word product every household has]and it already bought [generic 2 word hyphen product every household has].com.
So why not letting a simple private person using it for him and his friends, for once ?!?
Would you sell it to me ?

--------------------------------

not the first time i got an email of this kind but a really funny one as the domain is an electrical appliance millions of households have around the globe.

sound decision hugegrowth. I personally think the whole "me wanting domain you hold and i no speaking english better, sorry ... " is one of the biggest gags in the book. no one conducts themselves that way, grovelling before you, even if they were truly non-english speaking (or older than 7) i would expect a better email than that. if you want true sympathy you don't beg for it.

---------------------

Dear ____________,
Thanks for your response.
Cant u use other domain for your project?
Please dear I am requesting you please please please if you give me the domain name it will be very pleasurable to me and all of my friends will glad and pleased to you. As i am planning for hosting my personal site. I couldnt concentrate on my work for loosing that domain name ( _______.com). You told the right thing that i can use other domains like "_______.net" but why dont you use it.
Please try to understand my situation.
its my hobby and it will destroy a dream if you dont give me the domain.
I am ready to pay you the domain cost for that.
I just want the domain "_______.com" not others.
Thank you.

Waiting for your replay.

I understand that some people have a poor knowledge of English but this one is ridiculous. Begging is begging.
I doubt he is a domainer. Well I would not dare that kind of tactic :)

if someone came up to you on the street, and said he really really really liked your pants, because they were creased just the way he likes them, and could not find them anywhere else- and you gave them to him, you would be standing in the middle of the street with your ass hanging out, and nothing to show for it-

I've had about a dozen similar emails over the past year, claiming everything you can think of, all trying to tug on your heartstrings. Ironically it's always immediately after I get the name through a drop. And in an age when anything and everything can be googled - it ended up being way too convenient that the names/emails are completely clean and there's no website history to back up any claims...

You can never be too sure if something is a scam or not.. but that said, if it is, be prepared for vindictive childish actions if the scam doesn't go his/her way - from email-bombs, to crank calls in the middle of the night. I've even had someone contact my registrar saying they couldn't contact me because my whois info was "incorrect".

I don't think I'll answer any more of these emails. I replied back earlier today with another 'no', but haven't heard anything more.

I can see this scam happening for dropped names, but how does it happen for fresh regs? Can you get daily lists of all newly regged names, and do these people comb the lists and try to get the ones they want this way?

Yeah I guess you can download Zone Files for .com and .net from Verisign. That will contain new domain registrations too. Some fancy coding can work magic. =)

Just received this email...

"Dear ______
Its very shockedfull to me that recently you have registered a domain name "_______.com" which I choosed and searched on net very much time, and it becomes a disaster for me. I wanted to open a personal website with that domain name and my friends also liked that domain. But suddenly you have registered that domain. I dont know why do you buyed this domain as usual you dont create/hosted your site with it ( _______.com). I am from __________, i know that some people buy domain and they perked it for further incoming. But i dont know how much it will pay. You know as we are poor so we cant afford to buy such a domain with big amount. But i need this domain, i liked it, please give me the domain name " ______.com". I already created my site design with that name but cant hosting it for the domain. if you dont give me/transfer the domain "_______.com" then i have to re-design my site which will become very hard work for me. Please, i am requesting to you that, withdraw the domain name and tranfer it to me. Dont worry, if you want then i can pay the registration fee back to you. Just transfer it. If you want then i can register you a new domain and then transfer it to you. but ofcourse you have to tranfer your domain " ______.com".
If you interested to deal with me please contact me by mailing in this email address ([email protected]).
Thank you."

It's a five letter pronouncable domain that I bought for that reason only. Not doing anything with it now, but liked the name. What would you do?

What a poser! I sent that same letter to the owner of of sex.com.

Wow. I wonder when the 419 scammers will begin to incorporate domain names into their schemes.

"Greetings to you, dear person! I am the High Prince Gabba Gabba Hey from the Provincial Province of Progeria.

The reason(s) I am contacting to you this day is because because because of the wonderful things he does and also importantly because there is a sum of the amount of $64,239,202.32 that is in the limbo and the watusi, but sadly not being suited to its very purposes and original intentions.

So you, very kind person of the US Americans, have being requested to help and assist with usefulness to our just cause. In return for your general animosity, you will be rewarded for your kindness to help with these transactions without delay!

By performance of a very simple transfer of your domain name "GenericDotCom.com" to our regal legal representatives, the Council of the Board of Highwaymen and Women, you will be greatly honored with the due receipt of these many funds released directly to your bank account.

It is imperatives that action is underway immediately for this transaction to commence and those monies to find their way to you without requirement for maps in locating the USA. Please, yes, do take the opportunity to make transfer of this domain name to us so that you may enjoy the fruits and nuts of your labors.

Much thankfully,
Prince Gabba Gabba Hey
