I have written a great deal about this Shaggy. Just do a Search on my User ID and look through some of the threads. Doberry is correct that NO-ONE can predict the future. However I see a lot of things happening both in the domain business and business in general that leave me feeling confident that .US will have a major impact in a few years.
Don't forget the German country code .de is the second most popular extension in the world - far ahead of .net and .org. If a German country code can reach those heights, how high can the country code for the world's largest market - the U.S. go?
Some people say well .com is the US extension. Wrong. That is used all over the world - but more importantly the supply of names is completely exhausted. 4 million new businesses will be formed in the US alone in the next 5 years. They will need domain names that make sense. They will have to look at another extension. .Net is identified with internet infrastructure, .org with non-profits, .info with informational sites, etc. The logical place for them to turn will be .US just as the Germans did with .de.
I also agree with Bob that some may turn to .net due to its familiarity and it will become more of a general term than it is today.
I am betting money on how I think the future will play out - but anyone else's guess is as good as mine. Don't bet anything you can't afford to lose.
I also buy .com .net and .org because you have to have something to sell today too! I am also going to turn more attention to developing names that I have. That is the smartest path of all if you want to build value.
