very very slowly

you should not believe that

here's the latest from .eu looks like they are the fourth in Europe in cctlds:

"
.eu has succeeded in becoming Europe's fourth most popular country code top level domain, surpassed only by .de (Germany), .uk (United Kingdom) and .nl (Netherlands). .eu is the ninth most used domain worldwide. For the first time, the official website of the Swedish EU Presidency can be found under a ‘.eu’ domain name: www.se2009.eu .
Background
Since first opening up to all EU residents and organisations established in the EU in April 2006 ( IP/06/476 ), .eu has succeeded in gaining public favour. By its first anniversary, 2.5 million .eu domain names had been registered ( IP/07/483 ), another 300,000 domain names were added in 2007 ( IP/08/530 ; IP/09/536 ).
Management of .eu is entrusted to EURid , an independent non-profit organisation. EURid is preparing for the official launch of internationalised domain names under .eu"

....

check the facts, i will not do the research for you

but this is only PR

they had huge sales (like .info does) .eu per 1 euro or less
most of them will expire...

it grows very very very slowwwwwwly

By its first anniversary, 2.5 million .eu domain names had been registered

another 300,000 domain names were added in 2007

2,500,000 + 300,000 = 2,800,000

today: 2,958,000

so it is only about 150,000 domains in two years!!!

for the whole EU (population 500 million)

growing very slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwly

Perhaps you are right. I don't own a single .eu domain.

Probably a lot will drop if they were regged for under a euro.

I do think it would be wise to pick up the .eu along with .com
and choice cctld's for a broad based business in Europe.

I'll have to disagree with that one. While .us is gaining popularity most Americans still think .com unlike countries like the UK and Germany that think .co.uk and .de respectively.
Correct!

.es is also very popular, and .co.il is more common in Israel then .com or any other extension.

As a European I wanted to add some information on our perception of ccTLDs. In most cases people consider .com an American (and less so, international) TLD. So they would go to the country domain in most cases but when they are looking for 'americanized' content would go to .com.

From companies' perspective, most companies that do international business or want to be perceived as international/american would do a .com, otherwise ccTLD is the standard.

One example would be ID&T, which is a dutch event company. All their ads on Dutch TV are in English, same as their website, to give it more international appeal.
