I like .info, but I think .net is still far better. I have had many generic .nets that got a lot of traffic, mostly type-ins. I got nice traffic to .nets that the .com was developed also. I think people accidentally type in .net for whatever reason. I don't know of anyone who would ever type in .info except if it was on purpose ;0)

My experience is in agreement. This is an interesting thread with sophisticated input.

While Google et al consider domain age important in the algos, I'd say the majority of .net's would have the edge on value in a natural head-to-head. But only because they have been around longer and may have some history.

Other than that I'd say branding is the key to value from an end-user perspective.

In its simplest terms .info offers the best roi than .net, whether hand regging or buying from resellers
In terms of evolving markets, imo .net is stagnant & slightly going off
.info is burgeoning & growing fast
I know which side of the camp i'm in

I came into this entire domain business several years ago; unfortunately, I was forced to give it up because I had just started college and absolutely had no time for juggling and developing domains and attempting to balance that with my educational goals. That being said, I remember when .info's were being registered for free at Dotster. Even now, .info registrations are between $2-3 on most major registrars.

I look around in the sales threads, Sedo and Afternic auctions and I really only see the premium .info's being sold. I'm looking at some of these sales threads and personally sickened that people expect for their not really brandable dictionary .info domain to be sold for $xxxx. I'll be honest, I've never seen any company that uses a .info as their main website. People don't randomly type in .info's into the address bar like they do with .com's and .net's. Hell, I bet the majority of the population doesn't even know that the .info extension exists.

Sorry for the long winded diatribe, but I think there's a reason .info's are being registered for $2-3. Honestly, what would you rather own, sex.net or sex.info? How about school.net or school.info? It's usually a little explosion of overpriced and inflated sales that spark the boom of some second generation extension.

Alexander, in answer to your question I would rather have sex.info and school.info!

If you look at my sig you will see that I am a fan of the .info, but besides this I think it is easier to market if the site is not a commercial site selling goods. This is why by the way that you do not get companies using the .info as 'their' web address, but they realise the power of advertising on those domains! ;)

The .net is seen as a 'not quite' domain name, not quite commercial and 'not quite' an informational.

Touché.

It just seems that the reputation of the .net extension is a bit more enforced through it's history. .Info really has no history, so it's future is uncertain. Of course, you can also question the uncertainty of the future for the .net extension. You're absolutely right about the marketability, but from a seller's, and obviously business's, standpoint, .net just looks, sounds, and feels much, much more appealing.

If you want to talk about domain history, then .net was really only used for technology websites.
