I am just wondering!

if there will ever be competition (I mean real competition) for Google?

1) Search

2) AdSense / AdWords

As of now as I see Google knows more about individuals then they know themselves.
And they are archiving all the data and analyzing every day to make the search better and they are better at targeting ads for individuals behavior etc.

I time go by, they will have data that other companies could not even dream of having.

That would keep their competition miles behind.

Any thoughts are comments please?
How can any company even compete with them?

Do they ever get split like the AT&T in the past?

For years people thought the same thing about AOL.

Probably, Facebook.

Facebook now has Docs developed by Microsoft. Maybe some more apps developed by others will join Facebook. Facebook could possibly do "search" in the future.

There is one already.

It is called Goojje.com

This is China's answer to google.

The concept is, if Google is the internet's big brother then Goojje is its little sister - not to mention it is a direct knock off and hack of Google.

whoever gets Search Engines to talk in English.

"what's that webpage with the story about Obama being pro marijuana with a picture of the white elephant?"

I've ordered a book "Understanding Natural Language" about some amazing talking computer programs, if I can get it to work I'll be buying Jive.com!

Facebook announced at f8 last week that they plan to take on Google. Quite what all that entails, who knows. But they made their intentions clear. I think Google Buzz was actually an admission of a realisation that social is the way the web will evolve and Facebook are ideally placed. It's already the most visited website and 2nd biggest search engine according to a radio item I heard the other day. I like Google myself but I'm all for evolution and anything that makes life easier.

Do you think they are comparable?

Yes. While Google (hopefully) learned a lot from AOL no business is indestructible and they can fall.

AOL was so big that everyone thought they would be around for ever and be an permanent internet giant. Now, they're struggling.

Google is a giant now but they are very vulnerable. While their search engine is still a huge success, their funding is from advertising an people are getting smarter - they're realizing the small cut of the $$ from AdSense so they'll start looking into alternatives - affiliate programs. People who purchase Adwords want exposure and if fewer people are using adsense, then bids on words will go down since fewer people will be using those and may opt for straight forward / targeted advertising and/or affiliate programs.

yes, eventually this or something similar will happen

either that or ...

the people will just get tired of google having too much influence and will demand it's dissection and de-construction

i think you'll see the beginnings of this in the next 2 to 5 years, if G stays on current path.

G will be walking a fine line between being seen as big brother or servant of man

world politics, censorship issues with china and others can sway public opinion to G's side

but while the public is loving G... G is swiftly moving to expand it's reach and dependancy

no existing web entity will ever exceed G, but a NEW company or IDEA will always have that potential

imo...

AOL shouldn't even have been brought into this discussion. Their foundation was dialup internet, Google is search. Big difference. I remember people always bringing up Altavista when the topic was, is Google going to survive, be the #1 search engine etc. Google isn't Altavista. It was silly to bring that up.

"People who purchase Adwords want exposure and if fewer people are using adsense, then bids on words will go down since fewer people will be using those and may opt for straight forward / targeted advertising and/or affiliate programs."

There will always be a place for Adsense and with Adwords, I don't even use the content network to advertise and there will always be a place for search engines so those ads will always be there. And now, they're even putting their own affiliate links in those spots.

So for search, no competition. They've been #1 for awhile, nobody is going to threaten that. Many reasons for that.

And they're getting into everything, have been for awhile, pretty diversified, search has been just the foundation.

They have 20 Billion hard cash - They can buy an upcoming company with good technology.
-- if the company say they don't sell, google can buy the employees with bigger pay packages and kill the little guy before the birth or just after the birth.

They have the cash to buy any thing that comes on their way.

I think it is not too late for people who like to buy http://finance.yahoo.com/q;_ylt=Aq3...BuBHBvcwMxBHNlYwNxdW90ZXMEc2xrA2dvb2c-?s=GOOG.

imo, Facebook is probably the only site who could be a serious G competitor if they decide to implement a good search engine integrated within Facebook and add other features.

They already have the traffic and also run their own advertising program which could be greatly expanded similar to Adwords and Adsense.

A search engine is a different animal tho. Awhile back some people thought Wikipedia would compete with Google when they launched wikiseek in 2007 (now a parked page) but it was never a real "search engine" it was just Wikipedia site search. A real search engine crawls and indexes the internet. It's a major undertaking. And why would they do that anyway? I can understand good search within their site, they want to keep people within Facebook. But a search engine would take people off the site. If you're talking more about Facebook competing with Adsense that kind of thing, haven't heard too many good stories of their Facebook Ads. So not really a threat at this point, probably never.

Was just checking the Wikipedia on wikiseek - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiseek

Launched in 2007, no longer active by 2008. And if you read the stories back then, lots of people thought this was going to take down Google but didn't actually understand site search vs. search engine.

Advertising on their site is different from advertising on their site based on context.

Google is the super god in that area.

To get ads relevant to the site/page content and to understand keyword stuffing etc is a great achievement.
-- That is where Yahoo failed and have to get out of that business completely.

As of today no one is close to Google
while future may find some one that can compete with google
- no start up in near visibility.
That makes them the real winners.

Only chines Government funded hackers are a distant threat..
I am sure China is mad at Google and do everything in their power to pull Google down.

I think any competition thrown at Google will just make them stronger. They have already cornered the search industry, which if you have that, you have the people who want to advertise with you, ie; adwords/adsense. Their chrome browser never really got off the ground, but I like what someone wrote earlier...."they diversify" and are not one dimensional. They are along the lines of what some of us old timers remember IBM as being....keeping everything behind closed doors with little internal friction getting out in public, almost cult like...imo

Google is very scared of WPP, which is the worlds biggest advertisement agency who also bid for doubleclick before Google bought them out. They manage the largest spend for Google as well as any marketing channe through on individual entity, piss them off, you lose a great deal of revenue. Google constantly does favours for WPP to keep them happy!

Also watch facebook closely, they will be the biggest competitor for Google in the next 10 years, specially now that they are taking myspace music market share, by integrating with spotify!

what is WPP?

And 10 year is too ling in web - if google has next 10 years for them (they don't need anytime after that)
Google will have enough money to buy a continent.

AOL became a dinosaur, they never changed with the times. They relied on an old model which caused their failure.

Google is a very smart company, they have foreseen and adapted to changing times. They add features on a regular basis, the quesiton is why would you need something else when Google keeps providing it all. Google, thus far, has not made those ancient mistakes that AOL, IBM, and others have made in the past. Technological business models that often breed initial success are not sustainable for future success. Without some adaptation or complete change they cannot complete.

Back to AOL, it's was almost inevitable that AOL would not be able to compete once Dial-Up became an old technology. They did nothing to change customer perception that they were a dial-up company. What else do they offer? Tech geeks like myself, often refereed to AOL as Amateur On-Line meaning only newbies would use AOL.

Google has offered a search engine, then adsense & adwords, then Google Chrome. It's keeping up, evolving, changing, adding, growing. What Google is, is not what it was or will be. Google is going to be hard to knock off until some future change demands it, until the consumer sees a need for something else. When will we not need a search engine?
