An interesting thing about AOL about the time their big decline from the top started is how they could care less about client relations making it virtually impossible to cancel an account and stop the monthly billing which sometimes could go on for years after the account was never used, making customers hating them even if they had more modern products to sell. In a way that is similar to what 1and1.com is doing today with ongoing billing after the domain is no longer there.
