There have been many here who claim Wait List Service will only continue the strength of places like BuyDomains and UltSearch as they will merely buy zillions of WLS's with their financial power.

I have always said it's very unlikely they will even participate in WLS due to the very high cost (vs the current free drop method) and uncertainty involved in likely never grabbing the name.

I don't see any chance BuyDomains will do WLS. I don't think they would say this if they did not believe it themselves to be so.

This was extracted from their website today: "This (WLS) fee merely places a prospective registrant on a completely useless waiting list......."

Anyone here know when WLS will start? We should all welcome it to at least level the playing field so places like BD do not get most of the drops. as they now do.

Buydomains buys snaps on lots of names all the time to add to their collection. A lot of names are ones they already own the .org or .net. A snap costs $69 so if they can grab a name at anything less than that $30-$40 then I think they will go for it. Snapnames is pretty much almost like the WLS now so I wouldn't be surprised if snapnames one day says we changed the name of our system to WLS except that they don't have to pay registrars money at all anymore and it all goes into the coffers as profit. Snapnames has so many registrars jumping on their bandwagon now that they catch the bulk of the names. I will applaud namewinner for getting some great names lately but no doubt they target high bid names. Has Dropwizard and others been catching any good names this month?

I don't think the question is can buydomains afford to use this method, but can we as average people afford it (whenever we find out how much it will be and if it will even in fact go into effect).

Snap costs them less as they buy in bulk.

They also have bids at namewinner... They are winning names and pay a lot.

WLS = EVIL !

Umm... you DO realize that WLS is going to be run under license from SnapNames, right?

High cost? First of all, SnapBacks cost substantially less than $69 in volume. Secondly, if you look at the ICANN DNSO archive, a SnapNames official refused to directly answer whether there would be volume pricing for WLS, saying it is a perfectly legitimate business practice.

Which it is.

If BuyDomains just paid $10,000 for JCA.com on Namewinner, how do you figure that they will not be able to afford WLS? BuyDomains already uses NW and Snapnames extensively.

Anyone thinking Buydomains isn't going to be a large player in this is dead wrong and will be caught with their pants down. Obviously they prefer the current system b/c they have a huge advantage but think about the money they are using to gain this advantage with registrars, their own private connections, snaps and namewinner. If they no longer are needing these services it can now be put into WLS subscriptions instead. Seems to me they would get names a whole heck of a lot cheaper this way.

Yes, WLS is just a product licensed from SnapNames. Also, bear in mind that you can transfer a WLS to another domain, like a Snap, so their investment will be good for a year..

They'll buy thousands of them on the first day.

I am sure WLS will be starting July 25th. I see no signs indicating it will not start on this date.

Actually WLS licenses some of SnapNames' technology, but will work quite differently. It's also supposed to have a 100% success rate (at least that's what my former colleagues in the Registry tell me). If the descriptions I've heard of the system over beer and hot-wings bare out, it's only going to simplify BD's business. :sad:

Sux for the rest of us.
