sTLD Update:
ICANN Moves Forward in First Phase
Commercial & Technical Negotiations with an Additional sTLD Applicant

1 June 2005

ICANN is pleased to announce that the independent evaluation process, which began last year, has resulted in a further sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLD) application moving to the next stage.

As the process for selecting new sponsored Top Level Domain (sTLDs) continues from a pool of ten applications, ICANN has now entered into commercial and technical negotiations with an additional candidate registry, ICM Registry, Inc, (.XXX).

ICANN recently announced the designation of two new sponsored Top-Level Domains (sTLDs), .JOBS and .TRAVEL at the 22nd ICANN International meeting in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

ICANN has also recently entered into commercial and technical negotiations with the following additional candidate registries, .CAT, .POST & .MOBI.

Discussions continue among ICANN Board and Staff regarding the evaluation of four additional proposed sponsored Top Level Domains (sTLDs): .ASIA, .MAIL, .TEL-Pulver, & .TEL-Telnic.

An update on the status and progress of the additional applicants will be made as they proceed further through the process.

Please address any media enquires concerning the registry applicant, ICM, to Stuart Lawley +1 (202) 585- 0259 or visit www.icmregistry.com for more information. For any enquires concerning ICANN please email [email protected].

I agree that this is good news if it works the way it has been proposed. Stuart Lawley, the head of that registry was in Seattle. $10 of every registration is planned to be donated to a charity aimed at fighting child porn. He expects domains to cost around $75 a year (retail). At some point hard core sites may be required to use this extension, which makes them easier to filter and harder for kids to stumble upon.

this might sound like a good idea superficially, but putting websites into a digital ghetto is troublesome. soon any site that the officials deem "unacceptable to mainstream society" will be forced into a seperate TLD and then "more easily filtered or blocked".

They are thinking to make as much money of us domain speculators as possible. Keep adding exts. The more domian real-estate buyers will buy. Most the world only uses the big extensions, add more and more revenue is made by people who register. That is what they are thinking.

The name of the game is money. Not for us but for them. The more extensions the more registration. Making our domains worth less than before. We have to purchase more and more and then they will add more exts. Not to help commerece but to line their pockets.

Any idea on what happens to all of the pre-existing .xxx domains registered through new.net? I am curious because I have several. Those of us that have existing .xxx domains through new.net are probably screwed because .xxx was not an ICANN recognized TLD prior to today's announcement. Any thoughts?

I have just sent an e-mail to New.net Support. I will post response once received.

Correct, they won't be grandfathered. They'll run in parallel.

But here's the big deal that can't be overlooked: TRADEMARKS. If someone trademarks domain.xxx because they have it at new.net, they can try to make a claim against anyone who registers that domain under the "real" .xxx extensions.

Man, new.net should have stayed out of it to begin with. I remember when I was a noob and bought a .sport domain, VERY stupid of me.

I remember when i tried porno.xxx and lesbian.xxx and even anal.xxx and I could have got them all, glad I didnt waste my easy earned money! lol....I speculate but not before I know it's gonna work! The people with .xxx are only gonna always have a sub-domain owned by new.net.... the guys there must be PISSED. This is the worst news they could have gotten, i figured it would go this route since them and ICANN don't really get along very well! lol thats what happens when you are too pushy with the big boys!

Now we all have a shot at getting the big .xxx names for real, problem is they are going to probably let sex.com automatically get sex.xxx during sunrise and so on and so forth for all the big names...ohh well, we can always fight to get MichaelJackson.xxx and CatholicPriest.xxx first! yipee! ;)

BushsDaughters.xxx ...theres an idea!

The creation of the .xxx net domain has come under fire from net veterans.
The decision was called "obscene" by Karl Auerbach, former board member of Icann which approved the .xxx plan.

Mr Auerbach said Icann should be giving priority to socially positive domain name proposals rather than helping pornographers profit.

The decision was also called "dangerous" by net privacy campaigner Lauren Weinstein, who said it could provoke censorship problems for years.

maybe .web would have been better ;)

after giving this more thought, this is very disconcerning. where will the lines be drawn, and who will determine which sites have to use .com|.net|.info and which use .xxx???

it will be optional initially, and then mandatory eventually for adult sites based in the u.s. imo
