That's exactly all those home buyers were led to believe over the years.

Don't for a second think, this didn't happen in the domain world.
It doesn't really matter.
Since you mentioned home...

Let's say there is Home with appraised value of $500,000.
Now, if there are many interested buyer, this price may go up.

Joe really must have this house for some reason and
Joe endup paying $750,000 and Joe is happy with it.

It doesn't matter you think Joe over paid.
Apprantly, this house is worth $750K to Joe since he is happy with it.

It's another story when Joe decide to sell this house.
But, Joe may never want to sell his house just as new owner of
Contests.com may not want to resell.

Or, Joe knows there is 100% sure buyer (buyer B) who would pay
$1 million for this house who wouldn't care about market price.

Maybe Joe knows that buyer B is Billionaire grew up in this house
and will buy this house for sentimental reason?

Bottom Line: Domain is exactly worth what buyer paid until it gets listed for sale again.

It appears that this was a hushed auction?

Does anyone know the buyers?

Was this auctioned by Yahoo to selected prospects that Yahoo Chose?

Inquiring minds want to know.

It's DomainTools's Roundtable 2009 Live auction.

I watched it online. Around 70 internet viewers at that moment and we can't see the situation in the room.

contests.com is too generic - if it sold for $15k I wouldn't be as suprised as I am at $380k.

i agree

although i would guesstimate value around 40 - 60k

someone overpaid by a country mile
unless they are minted and have a big plan and a big budget for promotion

interesting yahoo park domains :uhoh:

the domain this one is pointed at is worth the kind of figures we're talking, not this average one

Hi,

I wouldn't spend more than $380,000 for a domain, if I didn't have an idea what I would do with it. I can attest to the fact that having a premium domain (I own [edited].com) does not guarantee a huge payback.

Hey, I think you should turn it into a golf-related site. More money probably.

$380 K sale is good sale for Yahoo. I only think $100,000 range is the right one because of the domain being plural form.

Do you really want to go to a site that has only one contest? I think the plural form in this case is working for this domain.

Yahoo has a domain that I've wanted for a very long time. It's no where near as good as contest.com. I wonder if they will be parting with it? How would I find out ahead of time?

Contests.com sold for $380k is a good sale.
I understand it is different values to different buyers but contests.com I personally don't think it could be a great great site.
Maybe it could be important to a company or something. I just don't see it as that great in my head.

Hi,

If developed properly....it will all work out in the wash for them...no doubt.

Is 380K to much or to little...who knows.

If they turn it in to a $75,000+ net profit... a year business in a reasonable short period of time...380K will end up being cheap...IMHO

Then buying for 380K...no big deal...a wise investment....if they can not scale it out to about this level...then maybe not such a good deal.

Peace,
Dan
