How, or why, did you get interested in the domain industry?

Obviously non of us would care about domains if it weren't for the fact there is money to be made, but how or who directed you down this path?

Looking forward to hearing your stories!

Thanks,
Chuck

I am more developer as domainer. So to me owning a "nice domain" is sortof climax-bonus orgazm.

I got here because the more decent pricing, some names will give me instant ideaas on how to develop.

so to be short, I got in domaining because:
-the price
-the inspiration

I got started around 1999/2000. I started registering names for myself and clients.
I would park my names at afternic (not sure if Sedo was still around, I can't remember). It was pretty speculative as you could not monetize. All you had was a dull parking page to make offer. The game was either to develop or wait for an end user.
Like many I have some webmaster background so it's only natural to look for quality domains.

Between 2002 and 2005 was pretty quiet for me as I was busy with other stuff.
Back in 2005 I took a look at my idle portfolio, picked one name and parked it at Sedo and let it for a few weeks. I was curious about the traffic as I had no idea. I was surprised to see that it made $17 in 1.5 month. This was a real eye-opener. I had discovered the power of traffic.
I became a member of several domain forums and decided to get back to business seriously and make up for the time wasted :)

Ultimately I became a domaining junkie. Look what you have done

I've started in this industry because 3 years ago I was totally broke.
No house, no car, no work, no nothing.

I've make several works in my life but don't like me.

I've tried some affiliations online first but don't worked...one day I've surfed the web and find DNF and DNJournal so I've thinked "wooow the money are here!!!".

The subliminal thing of the story: I always work with the words in my life.
I've started make graffiti at 13 years old (aerosol art) on wall and trains first, after this I've started to make rap music for several years and I finish my life with domains lol

So work with the words is my road from day one. :)

This is how I've started.

I started in the industry early 2003. First 2 domains purchased was HotWebSpot.com and SadWeb.com (no longer owned by me). HotWebSpot was going to be a social networking type site (that's before I even knew what that really was- hell I didn't even know what hostng was lol) and SadWeb was suppose to be an off shute of a very popular forum. (this name was better)... Anyways, i gave up on the ideas thinking they wouldn't catch on, just fads. But I wanted my money back and so I googled (actually back then I was exclusively and Altavista fan) how to sell a domain name. And, well here I am many years later as this is where it brought me.

A couple years ago Rockafeller started talking to me about the domain industry, I was skeptical at first but ended up buying like 20 of his names which I sold sometime later for 3 or 4 times what I paid and the rest is history.

Thank you Rock! and ofcourse DNF,

Steven

I did very simply websites for clients.

In 2000 a client wanted a domain name. It was for sale at $3000 so we got a different one.

Having learnt how to register a domain, I went to register the .com of the city I lived in. It was for sale too, so I registered the .net.

So I discovered people bought and sold domains and thought I would give it a go. It took about a year to get my first sale and probably 3 or 4 years to break even, but it now earns me around 15 times what I was earning before teaching English in the jungle and I have a good stock of domains which I could live off.

As a matter of interest, both of the two domains I wanted were dropped. I picked up the .com of the city I live in for reg fee.

I always wanted to know how to get into domains but never knew how then, my wife got a job with RMG and one of the owners gave me a few websites to go to (none were this site :( ). I learned some stuff there and then found this place, learned a lot more and then changed my style.

Before it was the typical newbie mistake - "oh, this is a cool name!" (canceled a year later). Now, I'm trying for development and quality.

I know we've all done that and it's part of the learning curve in order to find out for yourself how this domain game works.

I actually bought couple of domains of other people by doing who is without even learning how the domain biz works, for example, searchfever.com which i still have, had a chance to get searchy.com from the same owner, couple of years back, but then I joined dnforum and namepros, and others..and learned my way, ive been in this industry since 2006

My background is in aviation and that industry is not always doing well. I wanted to do something where i'm creating my own career and opportunities, working for myself instead of someone else. All for a better life of my family.

I found DNF about 2 years ago but haven't done enough since then (just a few handregs but reading a lot). Untill last year when i started developing too. So far, i haven't made a dime yet but that time will come. I'm putting all available time into it now, its an exciting journey.

The internet, the web and the domains will stay here for the rest of the days. Believe or not, when I was a child, I didn’t like the computers, I thought they were the most stupid things ever created but little by little I needed and had to be involved in the computer business…making short the story, after looking and trying different e-business, I decided to go for something “simple” and not tangible. After I could understand how important the web was, is and will be, I decided to go deeper. As a civil engineer (one of my degree) any structure with a good and strong foundation, it will be very solid and stable and the same with the web; good and strong name, your business will be also strong. Right now, if any business isn’t online, it will be out in a few days…:eek:k:
