It seems they are getting the royal treatment (ie: pounding with traffic) and they probably did not take into consideration that there network and or server might not be able to handle the traffic this offer would bring to them.

I am not sure if domainsite.com has a lot of customers but I feel sorry for the people who actually pay to register domains through them and cannot manage their domains due to this downtime.

http://www.whois.sc/domainsite.com <--- also currently shows their whois server to be down.

Thats why that saying comes to mind "There is no such thing as a free lunch".

Probably there are a bunch of guys running scripts to register big lists and that’s what consumes all the bandwidth. I only hope that Owen find them and delete their registrations.

Web: that's what I was thinking as well. Would be a shame if a couple of jerks ruined it for the rest of us.

I think they should have 1 cent registrations or maybe buy one get 25 free. That way they can at least pin a credit card to potential abusers.

Also the bad thing is.... if people do abuse they get stuck with the bill I think as afilias is making them enforce the 25 limit.

Me too. Also the url forwarding wont allow the actual domain in the address, as the site thinks you are pointing to yourself. Anynoe know a way?

Someone help me asap pls.

I sold a domain I registered with domainsite but I am not 100 per cent surehow to put it into his account.

On the domain transfer page it says 'Transfer to someone elses account using their account code
', yet all I have and he has is his username, is it ok to use the username? If not where can he find the code?

He needs to log into his account where he will find a number which looks something like XXXXX-XXXXX - this is what you need.

It's free, so why not go ahead and take the opportunity to register some domains ? You've got nothing to lose.. unless you abuse this and register more than 25 .info domains. :-D

OK, we had some server issues. Evidently people like free domain names and the traffic to our site has been insane. We had two nodes that we load balance between and it was not quite enough. I've added another node to the cluster so hopefully that fixes the problem.

Just some stats if anyone is interested:
10561 .info domain names registered 09-02-2004
8985 .info domain names registered so far today (09-03-2004) and counting

On the abuse of the 25 max names issue, we will get reports from Afilias that tells us which names are not free and we will delete them. Abusing the system will just waste everyones time. From what I can tell, so far the abuse has been rather limited.

So far in 2 days you've had over 781 people (at max 25 names per person) take advantage of that offer. Sounds incredible. I would just like to clarify how Afilias would decide which names are NOT free. Is the 25 max per registrant set at the registry level, or can a registrant take advantage of 2 or 3 registrars offering the same free 25 deal and end up with say 50 or 75? I asked Afilias this and they said that information was "confidential" and to ask the registrar. "Confidential" my a--. Worried that several people may end up getting a bill for regged names they thought were free.

That's why domainsite are good because they don't take your CC information so their is no way they can charge you.

Namesecure on the other hand could be a bit more risky.

I honestly do now know how Afilias is going to restrict based on unique registrant. When I called registrar support and asked they said they didn't know. This is why I am making them send me reports on what names are and are not free. This way I don't need to worry about it too much on my end and can delete the ones Afilias is going to charge for (so if you try to game the system they will probably get deleted). I am 99.99% sure that the 25 names per registrant is unique per registrar. So you can get 25 at as many registrars as you want.
