BTW Greg - love the way you've started to spell .mobi to stop it getting indexed; classic!

I stole that idea from someone else. It had nothing to do with indexing for me. It did have to do with poking fun at mobey fanatics. :)

This rock:

On December 5, 2007, the third and final .MOBI auction was scheduled to close on Sedo’s domain auction platform. In line with the previous two .MOBI auctions, the available domains garnered significant attention and received many competing bids in the seven days the auction ran. The domains received so much attention in the final moments that Sedo’s auction servers crashed before the completion of the auctions, rendering our system incapable of processing many validly submitted bids, including proxy bids set by user’s using the feature to automatically bid up to a maximum amount, and sending out winner notifications in error.

While Sedo takes steps to ensure the stability and security of our services, the crash that occurred could not have been predicted given traffic spikes more than ten times higher than anticipated by previous high-traffic auctions. Decisions were made with the intention of protecting all parties involved, but as we have learned from investigating the crash more carefully since December 5th, the auction was compromised and as such, DotMobi has exercised its right to declare the auction results void and will conduct a new auction at Sedo.com beginning on January 23rd, 2008. Sedo will be contacting everyone who participated in the auction to inform them of this decision.

Sedo apologizes for any delays responding to user concerns about the close of the auction, but a thorough investigation was necessary to determine what exactly occurred when the servers failed. As the world’s largest marketplace for buying and selling domain names, we take great pride at Sedo in our efforts to ensure the operation and security of our marketplace at all times. While this crash has forced us to reconsider the maximum levels of traffic our site may receive at any given time, we can ensure all of our users that steps are being actively taken to strengthen our protective measures to ensure any auction—whether one domain or special auction event such as .MOBI—run smoothly and close without any of the problems we experienced on December 5th.

Thank you for your understanding and best wishes from Sedo during this holiday season!

The servers should certainly crash again at the next auctions then.

You really believe mobee bidders crashed Sedo servers?

(Disclaimer, I am including the results from that 12/5 sedo auction even tho they have to reauction due to the server issues)

In 2006 only 6 .mobi's hit $20K or more

in 2007 about 41 .mobi's hit $20K or more

Of the 26 .mobis that have sold for for $50K or more:

* only 1 of them sold in 2006
* 3 of them sold in the first quarter of 2007
* 2 sold in the second quarter of 2007
* the remaining 19 sold in the last three months of 2007 (4 of those as part of the 12/5 auction)

Um that seems to be going UP in value not down. So yes, it's possible, quite possible that the .mobi interest crashed the servers.

You should refer to the early days as pre and post Rick Schwartz bonehead flowers.mobi buy. It's February now. Shouldn't Sedo have upgraded their servers to handle the mobee onslaught by now?

It's called common sense.

yes, sedo released a statement based on this 'common sense' you speak of... anything outside of that is a conspiracy theory.

so what is your conspiracy theory?

There is no way a handful of mobey bidders could crash Sedo servers. Sedo couldn't keep a parking company going more than a day if this were true.
Put on your thinking cap. Snap out of the mobey trance.

Why should I refer to it as rick schwartz's buy? And rick's buy was in November of 2006. These significant increases in sales for .mobi didnt happen for a full year after. If you think that's what started this then again look at the numbers - only 5 over 50K within 6 months of his buy, the other 19 were in the last quarter of 2007...again when major corporations started developing for mobiles and choosing to use .mobi as their mobile presence.

Yes re: sedo servers, and they have apparently made the adjustments to the servers but some of the folks who bid and won on said .mobi auctions are suing sedo to complete the sales so the re-auction they planned has been postponed.

Look, I am a newbie here but it seems to me I have done some research and provided some stats including showing sales trends. You seem to be ignoring what goes on in domaining outside of .coms.

If you look at it like real estate, as many do, there are areas that do tend to increase in value outside of the top tier. Jesus, in the 50s real estate in Westchester and Long Island werent worth much - now they bring premium prices, not quite as good as NYC prices but pretty good.

Your logic is like saying only beach front property and city will be valuable, there are suburbs that continue to increase in value and right now, this appears to be one.

this assumes a lot of things... just because they run a huge parking company and are set up to handle an enormous load doesnt necessarily mean their auction system was able to handle the same load..

are you suggesting they dont know what caused the outage and just made it up to sound good? or that the mobey registry actually came up with the idea of having the servers fake-crash just to make mobee look popular?

I assure you the handful of mobee bidders didn't produce anywhere close to 1% of the same load.

You can come up with whatever conspiracy theories you want. I'll stick with common sense.

A handful?

Contact Sedo and ask how many bids were placed in the final minutes.

They were stupid to start and end every single auction at the same time.

But, nothing will convey or convince those that this was not a staged or planned scheme.

So why even bother.

$310 for iPhones. I am coming at you.

like it or not, anything but the released statement from sedo is a conspiracy theory.

again you are assuming their auction server is set up the same as their parking system..

OK fearless, since you seem to know a lot about this worthless domain I want you to put down estimates on what these .mobi names coming up at TRAFFIC west in two weeks will sell for:

porn.mobi
doctor.mobi
property.mobi
lottery.mobi
tickets.mobi
broadway.mobi
vegas.mobi
naked.mobi
banks.mobi
hollywood.mobi

Predict them, put down your estimates since the .mobi's are declining.

I predict 80% or more of the winning bids will come from online bidders.

How about some real estimates? Like porn.mobi will sell for $700 (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA...riiiiiiiiiiiiiight!)

Seriously fearless, bring it. You like to tell us all how .mobi stinks, and how well you know this market...give us some estimates.

I can't predict mobey prices anymore than I could predict beanie baby prices in the 90's.

Where my tag team? I'm getting tired fending off the mobee fanatics.
