It begins!

The first major step towards local search using .US as intended for the 60% of local US businesses that do NOT yet have a significant web presence. With .coms taken, what's their next best choice?

Of course Marchex has the .com zipcode portfolio, but they also have big holes in it where they don't own the names. This instead is a complete set. Remember, Neustar also manages the US phone # system, and has all the 800# series on reserve.

Like the smart money told us much earlier, .US is coming and it's gonna be huge!

A few days earlier I reg'd a couple dot org zip codes and noticed the us was also unregistered and seemingly available, but opted for the org instead (turned out that was an error based on this us network), so wondering how it's possible some .us zip codes were not already taken and how they managed a complete set?

They were all reserved. This is a special partnership deal with Neustar, and a way for them to promote their new .US only directory.

Losers? They're all involved 100%, just some taking longer. Who told you that 90210 was the most important US zipcode? You get that from the kiddie show Skipper? Give the Captain back his hat, and quit messing around with Gilligan.

With the claim that there is a high leakage from websites that don't use the .com version to the .com version, I wonder how much the owners of the .coms might benefit from the success of the directory.

Just wondering.

(of course I do have a few .com zips myself too)

i was just checking about.us for whatever reason, and they have a thing that rotates with pictures of people and sayings like "Id rather have [email protected] than somethinghardtoremember dot something else"

All the domains they mention are available to reg, and most are availble in the .com aswell lol

hankprice.us
teamknights.us
lynnwoo.us

so neglible not even to think about ,,,no different then if you owned car.com or cars.com

see overture count for
delicious.com very very small
vs.
compared to the convoluted del.icio.us

probably highest profile zip 90210.com only 150 with extension in overture
so its going to take more then just zipcodes,,its going to take an entire network interlinked.....

Looks like .us is going to get massive exposure, with this much force behind it in a few months almost everyone will want to get a .us domain for their local business. It is good that people can register .us domains through these sites, but it would be even better if they add a section for people who want to sell their .us domains or websites.

This is a non-starter at this point of being any real use to the average user...

I put in 19610.US where I live and they don't even have the more specific locality name ...

19610 is grouped with "Reading, PA" by the USPS, but 19610 itself specifically refers to "Wyomissing, PA" and has its own Post Office.

http://gallery.wyomissing.com/bennett/P8290029

Zipcodes are full of quirks that can tripup use of them in marketing unless hand-checked and massaged to fit that of what the people in a given zipcode associate it with.

Worse, the links on the 19610.US site aren't even closely relevant ... clicking on "Shopping" brings up generic, national links, but nothing truly local ... and that's very surprising, since Reading, PA is well known for Outlets, in particular VF Factory Outlets which are located in Wyomissing, PA.

It took the search engines and ppc several years to get fine tuned and to become of any real use and they still have some ways to go to become perfect. It might take a while to fix the bugs with the zipcode sites but you have to realize that technology is advancing at a greater pace and what took for search engines and ppc to accomplish in several years might happen in only a few months for the zipcode network. With the introduction of more powerful software and use of RFID it will be easier to know what is available in your local area stores at anytime. Although at the beginning it sounded great that you could access the whole world through the search engines, but when it comes to products and services most people are only interested in specific items in specific geographical locations. Perhaps in the future people will use the search engines for doing research and finding information and they will use geographically targeted portals such as ppc and zipcode networks to actually get a product or service in a specific area by either typing the zipcode or the name of the city. Nevertheless search engines, ppc, and zipcode networks all have a long way to go to become perfect but it will happen a lot faster now that there is more competition to provide more accurate information globally and to locate more products and services locally.

The zipcode set may be complete in the aspect of having most all active zipcodes, but here's something to keep in mind...

People tend to remember names better than numbers. There are exceptions of course, but generally, names are more memorable ... people who deal with toll-free phone numbers have known and exploited that observation for years.

There's another flaw with the zipcode directory, which on the face isn't obvious, but once mentioned is like "doh!" ... say someone is seeking information, that they consider local, but is located some distance, in regards to zipcode topography ... how would they know what zipcode to enter?

"Local" is definitely where the action is, but am skeptical about the wide adoption of zipcode directories to find stuff unless they're exceptional to what many of the search engines offer.
