Traditionally, when choosing a domain, the order has been:

1) .com
2) .net
3) .your country code

Do you think that this is still the case? Or was this never the case?

What are your thoughts on the value of .net? If you find a really nice name but the .com is taken, what would you buy first if everything else is available?

In general I would rank them in this order.

1.) .COM
2.) .NET/.ORG (where appropriate)
3.) .US

Sometimes a name will fit better in .ORG than .NET and vice versa.

Only domainers seem to have issues with NET/ORG. I sell them to end users daily.

to answer the OP's question:

Are .net domains even worth a damn?

Hell yes.

And why do people keep asking these same questions over and over?

Depends on your use. To resell it, you want .com if possible. If you plan on selling product/ads with search engine marketing, .net's & orgs work nicely. And I've been very happy with my .us results so far as well with regards to SEO.

And why do we keep answering them? Because someone answered it for us once upon a time too I suppose. But yes, there is certainly enough information on this forum to give a great domain education to anyone willing to take the time to read.

country codes seem to be doing better lately in dnjournal sales reports, and I think the trend will continue. Used to be if you used a .net people wondered why you didn't have the .com. Now, people wonder why you don't have the .com or the country code in many places.

.net's are still a good choice for global use if you can't get the .com and you are going outside your country market.

thanks for the twitter tech crunch link.

.net domains have always been overrated, probably because the early adopters (of corporate websites) are computer related.

For the rest of us, when your company domain is e.g. whateverbusiness.net, you are basically giving away the FACT that there is a whateverbusiness.com, which may well be your competitor.

I would vouch for one's own ccTLD any day.

It's not the TLD, it's your keyword. If the keyword is crap, then it doesn't matter if it's a .net or a .com

I've had 3 five-figure sales of .net domains. Then again, I pick my keywords carefully.

I'd say so, yes. Create a thread in the appraisal boards for best results :)

Of course, developing them would be perfect too.

Very true and precise.

Just because it is a place with half a million or 1 million does not guarantee success or worth.

Is it a popular tourist spot? Attractions? Vacation destination? Does it frequently offer top civic or sporting events?

Just like real estate, it boils down to location, location, location. Not population.

It wasn't so much that as it seems this is asked and answered almost on a weekly basis.

That all depends on where you are - in some countries their ccTLD is as good, or better than a .com

As for me (in the USA:

1) .com
2) .net / .org
3) .us
40 .info
Newsflash: Some names that I have in .com, .net, and .mobi and .mobi are leaving many of the .com and .net in the dust in regards to traffic. CTR is about the same in some cases.

Many (perhaps most) that are a .mobi and .net are geo's. One that has intrigued me for the past few months is ThreeRivers dot mobi which is more a nickname than a proper name (as in Pittsburgh).

With Bodis, I have a .us that has been the number one earner since the inception.

Well some of you may claim to be sick of seeing questions like this, but you are evidently keen to answer them. Have never had such a good response on DNForum so quickly apart from my 'your best .me' thread and '.tel = .fail'.

Thanks for your answers.

They are valuable but they seem to have been losing ground.
I usually stick to
  • LLL
  • strong generic keywords
  • possibly geodomains

Depends on what value you seek from them. For our company, if we get ONE lead that converts to sale through a .net, it's damn well worth it.

if you're looking at ppc/revenue metrics, then it's probably not your best choice.
