I've heard it mentioned that .ca could be considered by some Americans as California. How do American domineers feel about that? Is there a market for such domains targeted towards that market with the .ca extension meaning California?

I've thought of that from time to time but never seen .ca used that way. When you try to search the .ca extension in a search engine or overture the CA abreviation for California is a real pain. If it ever did catch on that way then watch out - ofcourse it would help if they removed the Canadian presence requirement to reg .ca

No I don't think it would work very well. If it was marketed in the way .la is/was perhaps, but right now, .CA for Canada is too established and only growing.

Well somebody (actually a number of people) have grabbed all the California cities (6000 people and up) and nearly all the counties, attractions, tourist haunts etc.

Some people also once registered every LLLL.com domain name. That didn't go over too well.

I bet most people in California don't even know that .ca is established for Canada, so if it was marketed as a California domain it could work. CA for people in California is what they are used to, just as BC, ONT, QUE, MAN are for provinces in Canada (except there are no extensions for those).

I think it could, but CIRA's limitations to the .ca pretty much kabosh this idea.

ehh.. some of them :greencool:

Tough call, california is naturally an attractive place for good looking people to go to. However, visit montreal once if your lifetime.

.ca for california was a smart call by many, but as stated above by others, when it becomes more well known as representing Canada, those will start to lose value as a State identifier. As .US takes hold, .CA for Canada will also be more recognized imo.

Not sure why we would want our Country's extension to be used this way, Canada is certainly not Tuvalu, we have a lot of business going on and a lot of established .ca sites taking advantage of Canadian laws and regulations...

Sometimes I think it would be nice if the regulations were slacker, and that is the domainer part coming out, but as a Canadian I think it is important to protect the .ca extension, we can all use .com and .net, etc... for domaining and other purposes...

Maybe they can come out with .cal for California???

It not only is considered it is used that way. Go into overture suggestion tool and search .ca (results below) The vast majority of the results are american and california oriented. The california city/.ca combo has generated lots of traffic (yes we have a couple wish I had more). Americans do think the .ca extension is the abreviation for california. :clap2: Have I mentioned I love their $$$$$.

I agree that it is not so much that .ca does not make sense for California, it is more that .ca is going to become more and more identified with Canada.

California is a great state but I think that in the long run it will lose this one to Canada.

I think these extension discussions are a little bit like an inside joke. You only get it if you already got it. Out on the street, a person who doesn't understand cc extensions will get confused by it and probably never get your site right. A person who does understand cc extensions will ask "why do you have a canadian domain extension?" I don't think it represents a company well that they had to pretend a canadian extension was actually a california extension in order to get a decent website at a price they could afford.

Those .ca searches in overture aren't necessarily people typing in .ca, they might just be entering CA without the dot for California. Overture doesn't recognize the dot. So it is hard to do overture searches for .ca for this reason, the results are tainted.
