I wonder what twitter does with inactive accounts.

They say they have the option to delete them after 6 months or more of inactivity. But I don't know if they go back up for registration after they've been suspended or deleted them.

There are a ton of premium twitter names just regged and nothing is being done with them.

I think I'll write them and ask.

Do people actually type in twitter usernames? What would be the main benefits of having a "premium" twitter name?

I joined twitter in 2007 and at the time a lot of good usernames were available to be had. I've started really using the site lately, you can follow people of interest and post about topics that interest you. It's like real time news, without the pressure of having to post something long like in a blog.

Has anyone heard of any $$$ figures that people have been offered for accounts? I'd thought this would eventually happen, especially for top notch words.

There is one celebrity name account I saw recently where the guy was asking for 1 million dollars, can't remember the name though. (thought it was bill gates)

Lots of fake celebrity accounts on Twitter too, people who have grabbed famous people's names. I wonder how they'll sort that out.

I read up on google a litle...

Just about 2 months ago...Twitter would allow you to switch your name to an inactive account (one not used in 9 months)....all you had to do was e-mail twitter at username @twitter.com and ask them. They changed that in late January 2009...

I believe they are figuring out now how to handle their usernames as I believe they realize how valuable they can be.

I tested it out and got this message:

Hi xxxx xxxxxx,

Due to high ticket volume, Twitter Support is unable to change usernames in cases of inactive accounts. Unless your user name issue involves Terms of Service violations, you'll have to wait until all inactive user names are released. We're working on a better long term solution for this.

* If your user name request concerns impersonation, trademark infringement, copyright, or another Terms of Service violation, please submit a request to the Terms of Service group via the web form. If you're unable to use our web form, please send your request to [email protected] for help from our Terms of Service group.

Thanks!

I don't see anything in the terms that limits the number of accounts you can have, which is good. It makes sense to have an account for your main interests so you can create groups to follow, like one for domains, one for music, one for sports, etc. Although having too many accounts wouldn't be good either.

One guy I know who works in advertising/design mentioned recently how Twitter really exploded in use during the last month. It is taking off, but hard to say if it will last or keep growing. Right now it seems to be everywhere, news services are using it to post headlines and link to the full stories on their websites.

I read there are like 30 people working at Twitter, they are funded but don't make money yet. They say they just want to get the user base going, then they'll worry about monetizing. It will be interesting to see how they try to make money with it. Reminds me of the Youtube situation.

Yep - I set up one for my cat & friends dog (I'm going to set up a pet product site in the future).

I'm seeing various DNFers promoting their businesses with Twitter. Is the additional exposure converting?

Guys, check this out (again, isn't this a felony, regardless of the fact that the person is a criminal?):

I'm sure a huge issue is that people take celeb & infamous people names and microblog as if it is the same person. They need to have some kind of a famous person verification or something....
