A couple hours ago there was at least $8,000 in value in it to at least four people.

Probably because they were sucked in by the headline names like Snowboards.com but couldn't afford it, so spent their money elsewhere.

Some of those names are true stinkers - no question about it. However, I am very impressed with the auction format. Live video feed with auto-updating bids and the ability to submit my bid live online. DomainTools has done a killer job utilizing technology.

I agree. Very impressive!

Which might be why you dont have any sales?

Most all of my sales are outside of domain forums, I dont sell domains on the cheap like others do here. I will agree that many of these domains dont deserve to be on the list, but replace them with other TLD's? NO

Dot COM will always be King while other TLD's trail behind.

$3,538,181.50 is what I totaled in sales.

$3,666,078 in sales total $21,692 average sales price
Compared to TRAFFIC MIAMI 2006's average sale price of $40,000 and Moniker's adult domain auction's average of $22,000.

some of the names weren't that great but you never know what will sell when you put it up for auction at the right price - all has to do with the price.

I mostly hand reg my names, and force myself to keep searching for .com's because it is just in so much more demand, and has more chance of type in; a so-so .com can still sell for a good sum. I also reg good .ca, but the market for .com is so huge. I'll buy a good .info, .net, .org, .mobi, but it has to be a stellar word or phrase. For example I regged satphones.info earlier this year, which I thought was an easy decision because it's commonly used term for satellite phones. .biz is so often available when everything else is taken that I rarely buy it.

I did like the format of the page for watching the live auction....
and the way the names were listed on the far right...
and were interactive....

was a LONG auction....

Compared to TRAFFIC MIAMI 2006's average sale price of $40,000 and Moniker's adult domain auction's average of $22,000.

I like to use average number of sales to measure performance, by my calculations, the last TRAFFIC convention auction in NY had 70 domain sales out of 200 domains, 35% domains sold.

DRT had 169 sales out of 450, nearly 38% domains sold. If you take into count the domains that should not of been on that list because of high reserves, and the fact this was DRT's first ever live auction, I think they did a outstanding job, especially with streaming the entire auction, and making this auction OPEN to everyone to Bid, Attend and Watch without the red tape...I congratulate Stephan for organizing such a great event, it was a huge success in my opinion, living up to his name SuccessClick ;)

AH...rfm...you might see the point I tried to make on FS's blog then:

Basically...

I tried to make the point a month ago that the domain industry as a whole would be better off holding more conferences for "non-domainers" than domainers....and cut the auctions down. (rigt now)

Conferences...just to 'educate' people in the advertising and marketing world, end user compaines about domains as well as all the potential 'end users' in the world.

Still...95% of these folks...do not 'get it'...because no one has bothered to educate them...or the education and things they think and believe about domain names...is almost completely wrong.

We have to educate...the masses...so we increase the size of potential "bidders" at future auctions.

pure and simple.

Peace,
Dan

I'm with you, Dan. It's what we originally set out to do, but found out that actually trying to reach the "public" is harder than you think. Even marketing companies and the advertising media outlets don't "get it" and with all-expense-paid offers to speak, still none could make it. I had to decide whether to spend my time trying to educate them or produce the show for those who did get it. I chose the latter. Next year, I hope to have more resources to reach the marketing departments, advertising industry news and mainstream news on the power of domains for promoting companies online.

Now, if a few more of you signed up to attend, that just might happen, and with results, as Dan points out, that will positively affect ALL domainers' bottom line.

I literally cannot believe some of the names that made it. There are several that I wouldn't register if they were available, some are just terrible and I can't believe the prices for some that sell. Names with 0 ovt w/ext, little or no meaning, no real end-users etc. I really must bother to submit some names to the next auction...

I'll agree there wase some worthless domains on the list, but not many, Very high reserves on good domains was much more prevalent....I'm sure the next auction well have a better selection process in place.

I think the list could of been smaller, 200-250 domains. This would of provided a more "Premium List", plus a little quicker auction.

I loved the format, and after the auctioneer starting getting the price right, he did a great job. I think in the next auction, some better domains will be selected but a couple fixes need to be put into place.

1.) Max amount of domain's that can be submitted. 10-15
2.) Submit Time needs to be extended. Like 1-2 months in advance
3.) If reserve prices are not realistic, they just do not get in the auction!
4.) More Human interaction with the domain picking..... Hire 5-10 Full-Time Domainers, just email the list, and have each domainer vote on which domains they think are the Best and what would sell. Pick the highest % out of that, and that's what makes it into the auction.

I am sure there could be more, so feel free to add them.

All in all, I would rate the auction at a B.

Not enough Live (at the auction) bidders
Couple problems with the feed at times
Auctioneer started off bad with wrong prices

The auction format was excellent. I had four domains in the auctions and all four sold, including one that sold for 4 times the reserve. So needless to say, I am very happy.

I just wonder why DT hasn't posted any comments about the results on their blog.

Jay and I and the NI crew are resting. Producing the show was like having a cement truck run over you twenty times a day, squishing you flat. Then we had to blow into our thumbs to inflate ourselves like cartoon characters and continue. That's why it's quiet on our side for the moment. Plus some late sales are still coming in. Next week we'll be very vocal!

We've received tons of positive feedback on the online LDA including from the bidders present at the DRT. It definitely was very exciting to be a part of this historic auction. Hang tight, cuz some new additional features are coming for the next one.
