This topic came up in another thread, but it was off topic, so I thought I would post just for this discussion.

As I noted in the other thread, "As for domainers being married to nondomainers - I don't recommend it. My recent ex never could see the value in what I was doing (until it came to valuing my portfolio for the divorce settlement) and he never wanted to talk about domain names and couldn't seem to understand why I was on the computer so much. Domaining contributed to our breakup."

I'd like to hear from you on this topic!

1) Are you married to a non-domainer? Do you think being a domainer is causing stress in your relationship? If domaining isn't causing relationship problems for you, what have you done, if anything, to keep it from becoming a problem?

2) On the other hand, I'd also like to hear from any domainer who is also married to a domainer. Do you guys ever get any housework done? Do you get romantic as a result of a great domain name purchase/sale?

[I wonder if there is a Domainers Anonymous....]

Thanks in advance for sharing!

All i know is...it's hard to convince a non-domainer the real investment value in domains. But when the dollars start rolling...they all start believing... :)

I think all non-domainers have difficulty understanding why we spend the time we do on the computer. That being said, I think if the other half can see the end results in terms of real value they might be ok with it. If you sell a domain and take them to dinner or something like that. I don't know of any domainer married to a domainer couples, are there any? I would like to know that also.

It would be a big challenge if you are an adult domainer and web developers.

You will have a hard time to explain what is on the screen!

I mean adult names and adult websites.

I think!

My husband is very Non-Internet savy. I swear he's actually jealous of the computer because I spend more time looking at it instead of him. The only time he's been interested in domain buying was when he decided he wanted to put up a fan site for his favorite old show and thought it would be fun to own that domain name.

Otherwise, he's not interested and wouldn't understand if I spent a ton of money on something as virtual as a domain name.

New series, on NBC: "Domainer to Domainer" - in the footsteps of "Hart to Hart".

Pilot episode:

When Jim Domainer makes a large purchase of .mobi names at a recent online auction, his better half, Janet Domainer becomes agitated and consults with John Hillyberry, a famous IP attorney about the prospective value of the loot. A Sedo appraisal estimates its value at $149,000.88 and thus Janet proceeds with filing for divorce.

In the next episode: Jim Domainer hires Francois, a French entrepreneur to undervalue the purchase of his .mobi domains, thus ensuring Janet will get less at court. In the meantime, .asia sunrise begins. Will Jim stay away from this new temptation? Find out tonight at 10:30pm Eastern.

bottom line is that if the person your going out with doesn't take at least some interest in what you do for a living (no matter what it is), you will begin to resent them on some level and they you :)

Back in 2000, my ex thought that charges on the CC with the notice "GoDaddy" were for porn. Go figure.

I think you've got a hit on your hands. In the May Sweeps episode, Jim can buy a domain that seems innocuous on the surface but turns out to be a porn site. Hilarity ensues when he tries to explain to his new trophy wife that he's not really into Asian Trannies, it was just an investment!

I'm pretty fortunate in the sense that my husband has a better understanding than most people on what I'm doing due to his computer tech background.

However, working from home does pose a problem. I work almost double the hours he does and I'm still expected to take on the "at-home mom" role. I've thought of possible solutions to this: get an outside office or shut up and deal with it but both solutions has worse outcomes. If I get an outside office, that's double the overhead. If I 'shut up and deal with it" then my stress goes through the roof until I eventually explode.

So, I communicate with him on a regular basis about it. If he loses sight of what it means to work from home for me, I just remind him. Sometimes I get so frustrated that I tell him I'll quit working to gladly do housework 24/7 and he can pay my bills. That pretty much gets the message across lol.

Overall, we share bills/housework but it's often a one way street with housework. However, he is getting better.

Bottom line, I do believe being married to a non-domainer can work. It just take constant communication; as with any marriage.

Even educated people like friends/relatives of domainers does not understand why domainers spend so much time on computer and spend lots of money on purchasing domain names.

Those who want to be in DOMAINING BUSINESS must think twice before entering in this business. Patience, Investment & Chasing are parts of this game.

my hubby is fine with it- he has even gotten to the point where he says, hey honey, am thinkin about buying a new car cover- can you pop out a few sales?

i told him- some people have hobbies- ones they pay for. like scrapbooking- nice hobby, and you have to pay for the materials. this is kinda like that- only i get a return on my materials. he has been great about it- i am lucky.

HI

My wife knows it is my job and part of my business... So buying and developing domain names is all part of my daily job...

I have tried to get her more involved in it so we could get twice as much work done and make more money but she is only interested for a few days and then she is back to playing online poker or chatting with friends on instant messenger...

But she keeps telling me when am I going to go out and get a real job....

So I don't think she really understands what domaining is all about.

Thanks
Tom Dahne

My wife is a non-domainer and she understands it's a job. Since I have owned other businesses that I ran out of the house, she understands the business aspect of it better. She does push on the "time" spent working, but that's the way it goes. I work with people world wide, so they are not all online from 9-5.

There always has to be family time so it's important to place that into your workload ;)

That's one of the hardest things to do when you work for yourself, not just in domaining. It's always, one more thing, one more email, let me check one more stat. It gets to where when you step away from the computer for an hour it feels like you're letting go of the reigns.

I agree 100% ! Sometimes good comes out of the "taking a break". It can help clear your head and when you do get back on the PC, you are refreshed and things can be more clear. The emails can wait, that's what I have learned ;)
