I have already had a fairly large company contact me about the availability of my facebook username. I can't share it quite yet but the company that contacted me is pretty much based on my exact username. Is there any precedent on the sale of social network usernames?

FB Squatting works for me.

actually it's user name squatters or alias squatters

it's not about the whole facebook, but only a user name or alias
and it's not specific for facebook

(domain squatters are not called internet squatters)

I sold Myspace/Casino a few years back for $200 then the guy who bought it lost it a little while later

Ha. I look at it more to promote my businesses...not selling. I do see very targeted differences....but kind of the same in the end.

DING DING DING!!!

We have winner!

So precise!

Squatting for the sake of Twatting etc is not going to have immediate results.

But getting in the mindset of promoting and increasing business is precisely what we should be doing - not so much as DOMAINERS but as business people and entrepreneurs.

This should apply to both Twitter and Facebook.

I selected to go with a locale that I know something about. A facebook account that I created will be geared towards more of a business oriented crowd. No offense to anyone, but I did not really register WinstonSalem for the purpose of domaining. Totally business. That does not mean that I would not like some domainers as friends.

But if I am going to introduce you to local buisnesses and business leaders then you have to be able to bring more to the table. What skills can you provide. These people will not so much be interested in domain names. But site building, SEO, site administration, etc is definitely a plus.

Even with the layoffs in local industries, this is still a very thriving, prosperous, and profitable area in the sectors of health, research, technology, and education.

Most importantly, as WinstonSalem itself has become a hub of those sectors above (including research and nanotechnology) I would like to be able to meet face to face and interact with these business.

FedEX, Dell, and HondaJet are just some of the recent new Industries into the region. Novant Health recently opened the Sara Lee Women's Center which added an additional 400 beds to an already 900 bed hospital.

There is an old saying in shooting,

aim small, miss small

applying that to your business and business strategies is precisely how I want to pursue this.

If I were to aim big (say NorthCarolina) then were do I start, what is my focus, and how do I draw in those I seek.

So applying the same sharpshooting terminology to my approach, I select one city that I am very much in tune with, very much a part of, and can focus my attention.

In the end, it will be those companies and their people who are also members who will be using their clout and connections to draw even more in.

Absolutely. Aim big if you want.

But do apply that same sharp shooting mentality.

Aim Big, Miss Big.

Agreed - but "openly" is the key word of that statement...

So here's my issue - hopefully someone out there can point me in the right direction...
I picked up a great vanity FB URL (Entertainment related/no TM risk/175MM Google Index/etc...) - I've also got a few quality Twatter account names...Each of these were picked up with the intent to sell at some point. Others have approached me to see if I was interested in selling their names as well (both FB & T)...

There's definitely a market for these things...
As long as anyone thinks there's an inherent "value" to something there's always a market for it.

The problem is that I don't want to risk getting accounts banned by posting details anywhere while trying to find potential "end users".

Any thoughts on how to hunt for buyers?

Cheers!

Here's the flaw in your thinking midgetlov - you cannot relate a facebook username to a domain name. The ownership rights of each are completely different. With a domain, even if you were blatantly squatting, you would have more rights than with a facebook username (or twitter for that matter).

Directly from Facebooks guidelines:

What are the guidelines around creating a username?

Usernames were created to make it easier for Facebook users to identify their profile and share with others. Facebook encourages users to consider the following when creating a username:

* Your username should be as close as possible to your true name (e.g. Jsmith or John.Smith). Names such as CoachJohn, BlondeJane, etc. don’t clearly identify you as well as your true name.
* Usernames can only contain alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9) or a period (".").
* Choose a username you will be happy with for the long term. Usernames are not transferable.
* Your username must adhere to Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

Can Facebook take back a username that has already been claimed?

Facebook reserves the right to remove and/or reclaim any username at any time for any reason.

So, I doubt anyone is going to risk buying a username account from you when the site in which the username is under can simply reclaim/void the username at any time without question.

Would you ever register a domain with a registrar under those conditions? I think not.

On a side note - regarding your username... did you read that little people have asked the FCC to ban the word midget on TV? story
