Just thought Id share what just happened to me, never happened before but I suppose I am just lucky lol

Ok so I buy names, a lot of high dollar names and found speaking with the CFO or the companys Legal rep is generally a good place to start.

So I do my research and pick up the phone for the CFO, ready to make a $75,000 offer on a name they do not use and have not in 4 years, was part of a company take over, no use to them now.

Any way I call, he answers i say " Hello my name is..." and before I could get that far he says " No time for this " and hangs up...

I was left holding the phone and asking myself how ignorant one could be, it isnt a large company and likely a struggling one ( remember I do my research ;) )

That's it, funny but sad and no I will no longer try, one time deal for me. After how rude he was I wouldn't give the $5.

The life as a domainer lol

I have had the experience of dealing with executives of 9-10 figure companys who have been great, take time out because theyre good people. Just another paragraph for the book I guess lol

Curious...do you find a certain day of the week to work better than others?

Like a Monday, maybe he had a bad weekend or the stock tanked in after hours trading or so on.

I know when I worked the corporate would, Mondays were hell for all the meetings, etc.

Or Wednesday, middle of the week.

Or even a Friday...give them time to ponder the offer.

Beside picking the day of the week (any day but Monday & Friday), the trick is you have to make it sounds like you are not a salesperson in the first 10 seconds.

"My name is zzzz and I represent a group of investors and would like to acquire one of your unused property, it would only take you 2 minutes and you can decide to pursue further or not"

I have been hung up on many times with my first offer including my attempt to buy this forum.

As a side point. Who has the legal rights to sell domains for corporations with stock holders?

I once contacted the owner (company) of a premium LLL.com expired at netsol.

They were just not interested in discussing the matter, and hang up...
The name sold for 67K at snap.

To sum up:
  • they don't understand the value of domains
  • they don't understand the value of money (they could have made good money instead, they let the name go)

The legal right is still the companys, the share holders do not control the day to day activity of a company (public). No one asks a share holder before they bought the name :)

@sdsinc, I remember years ago two names similar to your situation, joystick.com and du.org, both didnt care to take money and both sold for ood money on the drop. Some companys just see red tape and even $20k isnt enough to justify paper work belive it or not, sad again.

I got in touch with Dinan Cars... makers of high dollar famous tuning equipment for BMWs. I asked them if they were interested in me trying to acquire dinan.com that just dropped. They absolutely don't understand the value of domains. Simple response..."Thanks, but we are not interested."

For a company like that, a $15,000 investment a domain that matches their name seems CHEAP, but they just don't seem to get it.

If it was the last one, maybe he thought your were from JCPenny?

I have a vast amount of experience doing cold calls by phone. The number of solicitations I've made in the past year totals somewhere in the mid-high xx,xxx range.

I can tell you from that exact experience that "Hi, my name is..." is one of the most common solicitation introductions, and to anybody holding a C-level position, it's not worth their time to even entertain.

Have you tried emailing the guy? If it was a bad time for him, following up later might be favorable.

Some other strategies I would try are as follows...

1. Call during non-business hours and leave a voicemail. That way he has to listen to it.

2. Try to speak to someone in IT, or the webmaster. A direct referral from middle management could have him calling you.

As for introductions, I've found "Hi, is this (contact's name)?" and "I was wondering if you could help me out real quick..." to be equally efficient in getting a longer listening period out of the call's recipient.
