Peter,

Hang in there, it can be tough at the moment, but this will pass and you will be on your feet again. I've been there... too many times....

Well... same here... I have been looking for job too... The IT market is pretty bad now especially with financial firms... It's not that easy to look for a similar job. I am just building small sites for local customers and doing some redesign work. I am more interested to really concentrate in domaining.

Good luck with your job search!!

I don't think the sites you make are "small" by any standards mate :p

The mind is a needs factory.

Tell it what you want and it will deliver.

Lots of good advice already mentioned, and many potential ways to avoid the trap of "killing the cow" in order to have a meal (a la selling off assets too early before exploring the real potential you already have to create value).

Being out of work is not the problem - there are plenty of jobs (even in high unemployment areas there are more people working than not). The problem for most people is deciding and/or committing to a course of action that they believe in strongly enough to do whatever it takes to succeed (within moral and ethical boundaries of course).

There are an overwhelming number of people that are willing to help others get to where they want to go. You have to be able to articulate where you want to be or go to get vested interest from others (write it down if in doubt).

I am sorry to hear you lost your job - you have been presented a gift of “free time” that gives you the ability to do a stock take on your attributes and skills that are no doubt in demand somewhere close to where you live (and leverage those skills for a greater return that your past employment). If you can't find the demand - put your mind to work on ways to create it.

If you are struggling for ideas - get busy with a blank notebook and write down the most stupid ideas you have ever thought of and work through them again – with a little more detail.

The average person is said to have at least one idea per year that could make them a millionaire. The issue has never been a lack of ways or ideas, but a path to implementation. An average idea implemented well, is better than an excellent idea poorly implemented or never implemented (which is why most "million dollar" ideas fade into the bottom of an empty beer glass).

Good luck with your decision making process. Use the opportunity to inspire your mind into action.

That's my 2 cents worth.

You are in the right country at the right time when it comes to being laid off. While the East coast where you are might not be as booming as the West is, there are jobs a-plenty. If the financial strain does become too much, come West - you can throw a rock and hit a job.

Just saw your post, I'd think if you work in IT you'll find another job in no time - maybe set yourself up so you can do the work from home, freelance, etc. At least you are in a big center for the Maritimes. And you have a bit of time to think about domaining and developing your own stuff - maybe something you have an interest in and can blog about. You'll probably be back on your feet before you know it - keep in touch with your co-workers who were also let go and see if they have any leads. Let us know how it goes! Hang in there!

Do affiliate marketing, sell clickbank products, work cpa networks, etc. There's alot of ways to make money online besides domaining.

You now have a new full time job. Searching for a new job. Wake up every day and read new postings, send out resumes, enhance your skills by continuing to work on your web development skills. There are many opportunities awaiting you. Don't just settle for any job, wait for the right one. If you have special skills post them on the forum as there are always people looking to pay for work, development, etc. In the meantime here are a few jobs that may be worth considering

Good Luck!

Hey,

I just wanted to update this thread because I am happily back in the land of the gainfully employed!

It is funny how things work out, I spent three months going through interviews and sending out resumes etc, and things were not working out... The timing was bad, end of the year, and no one was hiring in my city... I decided to call on a former employer to see how things were going and it turned out they had 2 positions to fill. This particular employer had laid off a large number of employees years ago when I was first working for them so I had not really thought about them too much while searching... Anyway, to make a long story short they offered me a job and I took it and things have been going great!

I just thought I would post an update and thank everyone once again for being supportive and helpful. There really are a lot of good people here.
