More extensions = .com worth more.

Hmm, not necessarily so. Lets say someone approaches you to buy a .com .You say $2000. He thinks well ok so I can go and get same name with a different tld for say $20 . How does that increase the price of .com ?.
Other situation I guess is when he gets his name.xyz and starts advertising it,assuming he does so, then you might get more traffic when people type in .com by mistake. If he does not advertise it then simply you have lost a sale of .com.

Cannot see how more tld's will increase price ?. Confusion maybe, price no, unless you can tell me what im missing ?.

.. Or he can get his very own extension for $50k+. :)

But jokes aside, still; if he decides to go for the $20 .biz/.info/whatever, then he loses all the potential customers who will still type in .com in their browsers.

This whole situation can be summed up in three steps:
Step one: Obtain a large can of worms
Step two: Obtain a can opener.
Step three: Take a wild guess

This will be a cash cow for ICANN and will also breed more WIPO cases.

We may see a short term drop in overall domain prices (including .com) but people have been typing in .com for over 15 years now and it is very hard to break that habit. Would cheese.landolakes get more traffic than cheese.com? Heck no.

Think of it like housing. If the price of entry level housing moves up, it forces the prices of all levels above it up too.

With domains, when new extensions are introduced, a market for them is created, and this market pushes the price of better extensions higher.

It only works this way round. If the price at the upper end of the market goes up on it's own, it doesn't necessarily 'pull' the prices (of the lower end) up with it. In this case factors are effecting the top end, which are not relevant to the lower end.

So will this open up a TLD market similar to the domain market? People selling TLDs? Landrush?

I'm sure Anhueiser-Bush would love to have a .beer and/or .alcohol TLD (budswiser.beer), MLB would get .baseball (redsox.baseball?) and/or .mlb, MS could get .software and/or related , (Windows.operatingsystem?)

At $50K a pop it is a nice investment for corporations but not feasible for your average person (dnf.dcg / dnf.dotcomgod?). This could also open up a new market for the domains in each TLD.

Will it kill .com? No. Heck no. Will it give .com a graze and maybe a little bit of bleeding? Maybe but nothing long term.

I look at it this way.

When was the last time you typed in a domain to your browser other than .com, companies have spent millions building thier brands and they were all built around the .com. The search engines would need restructuring would they want to kill thier main advertisers. Would they restructure there business models to gain respect from people that develop thier own tld? I highly doubt it, as in anything money can be spent on branding but will you the consumer remember the other tld. All my 6yr old knows is .com it has been brain washed into our children this is something they will always remember and it will grow with them also. the .com will never lose value.

just my 2 cents

now go buy your .coms the forum is filled with them :p

This marks the end of the domaining industry!

Domains are likened to Real Estate. In reality they are more like Car Registration Plates. The vast majority of those registered have little or no intrinsic value. But does a massive increase in car registrations in China worry the guy that paid millions for the famous 8 number plate. Not a bit of it!

It is all about quality. Frankly you can forget about all the me-toos that are about to come out. And you can forget about all the me-toos that are already out. They are not global contenders and never were. But equally the so called dot com long tail is not going to worth a great deal either. Who want three and four word combos when you can have whatever dictionary word you like in ever more obscure extensions?

The bubble will burst. There will be a flight to quality even that which has hitherto not been recognised. Quality is going to be worth a lot more. Average is going to worth very little.

Another issue is censorship. Many of the objections relating to freedom of speech and expression raised with .XXX and .KIDS ( both of which have been denied time and time again) would also apply to custom-vanity TLDs...

Many companies and some individials alike could be forced through laws / peer pressure / technical reasons to utilize domains only in certain custom-vanity TLDs whether they want to or not ... and being at the mercy of the of the custom-vanity TLD owner who could change the rules anytime, variable pricing (like .TV already does), content restrictions, etc.

Has ICANN really spent $10 million researching this issue? -if so, they'd better pony up another $10 million to get a clue before it's too late.

Excuse me if I am wrong, but hasn't ICANN largely been responding to the demands of the domain community and foreign governments (non-US) who have been pushing for IDN TLDs?

I seriously don't believe large corporations even Chinese Corporations really give a toss about new TLDs.

Nope, it would likely be acquired by Hormel Foods, which makes the infamous processed food product SPAM, and already owns spam.com.

Further evidence to this:

http://www.dnforum.com/f247/icann-l...r-subscription-thread-307684.html#post1488348

.love, .hate, .city - as the 'smart' revolution continues, and the majority of products in our lives become networked and automated, more addresses will be needed - .fridge, .stove, .home, etc.

The speculation on this move will be wide and wild!

On a tangent - how will 'The Grid' change (or maybe not), the future landscape of Internet Domains?

The dot com extension inmo will continue to increase in value even when thousands of domain names with their fancy .xxx are unleashed to the world.

In fact anyone with a half decent dot com name or two word names with relevancy should hold on to them. This is a gamble I am prepared to take.

I'd much rather have dating.com then dating.love because people will vary the extension part, such as lover, lovely, luvvie, loveme etc etc and with all these variations will devalue the principle domain. Use the word sex and the mind just boggles what you can do with that one.

It's going to keep the lawyers busy for the next decade that's for sure.
