Gosh - couldn't do that then....why, it'd be like putting a phone number AND a fax number on the same ad! Who'd be stupid enough to do that, eh?

Because people know what a fax is, and they know what a phone is. They don't know what a .mobi is. Get your logic right. You're presupposing that they'll know about .mobi.

'it'll cost a fortune to advertise'

I showed you it wouldn't
It still would. Don't you think it costs to update already existing advertising?

'it would be too confusing'

I showed you it wouldn't
See my first statement.

Imagine a TV advert for a company. How do you think they'll go if they want to advertise both their .com and .mobi?
"Visit us at www.XYZ.com, or if you're using a mobile phone, visit us at www.xyz.mobi"

Wow...can you imagine how stupid (not to mention expensive; every extra second adds to an ads cost) that'll sound?

my prediction....at some point in the future, there will be a "resistance" movement to all this data flow via digital devices...

a movement back to analog!
Couldn't agree more! Nothing beats holding an actual newspaper in your hand. :)

My question is not so much about .mobi but why do people assume that sooo much internet browsing will be done on a phone?

I'm sure this browsing "airtime" will be an additional cost, so with shrinking paychecks, layoffs, inflation, poor housing market etc, will consumers be willing to pay these costs just to shop on a phone, rather than pc's or laptops?

not phone - but handheld computer that makes phonecalls too. evolution. airtime will someday be a flat rate across all carriers (of course i have no predictions when this will be)

a movement back to analog!

as against-the-grain as it might seem, i was actually thinking this the other day too... so much so that i said it out loud to someone... seems like a crazy thought on one hand but then again not really. i think interest will be high at first and the "craze" will die down in some areas for a while....

that said, i dont see it completely going away at that point... there are too many cool things you can do via mobile that wasnt really possible before.

there will probably be a mobile "bubble" at some point too from overbuilding, etc..

Completely off topic, from a general point of view. Don't you guys sometimes think that we've built up a "culture of convenience" of sorts? Ebooks and electronic maps and electronic newspapers etc. are all fine, but there's just something about holding a new book or reading a newspaper with a cup of coffee, or stretching a huge map on the car hood to find some tiny road...no electronic device can recreate that.

Ah well, back to the war room

that is exactly my point with the prediction of a "resistance" movement!

I actually visualized a setting where everyone on a bus had their "mobile communication" devices except this one "old man" who was "READING" a newspaper.

They looked at him in awe, wondering what is was that he was so enthused with.

lol

the good old days of just sitting back and reading the paper.

With .mobi's low recognition, how can you expect to have traffic?

You know, I don't have any stats or anything, but I believe there is this "movement" starting.
The owner of the local record store tells me that while CD sales have dropped manifold over the years, LP sales have actually increased. It might be a one store phenomenon, but I definitely like it when I hear it. Nothing beats a nice vinyl record with huge cover art...

When you guys mention .mobi to your friends, do they;

A) Engage in a intelligent .Mobi discussion?

B) Pretend to know what .Mobi is?

C) Ask you to Register some .Mobis for them?

D) Have a "I don't know WTF your talking about" look on their face?

I would think C. The way they hype it, anybody would wanna reg .mobi names. 616 threads in the .mobi forum, 50 in .ca, 1 in .de, 1 in .co.uk - TLDs that are much better than .mobi. If thats not hype, then what is? Keep on posting every little random detail about .mobi, inflating its value.
