Nerve damage from a vehicle accident does not make sitting for long hours comfortable.

Every 2 hours take a 15 minute break, stretch, do some brisk walking or some form of activity.

Trust me, you will still be thinking domaining and you'll go "SNAP! Yeah, that's a good one."

I always take a break when an offer comes in. Clears the mind and allows you to focus on that one thing.

Of course, you all need to get that new 30 hour clock.

Hands, Fingers, Arms, SHoulders and Back all get affected long term.

Bad posture is the thing that makes us all slouch in our chairs after long days at the computer.

At 43, I know I need to start doing something to offset the time I spend in front of a PC.

So i'll take baby steps and start walking at night.

Forget all that stuff, here is info just on eye problems we can get:

There are many different possible-contributing factors to eye problems related to computer use. They include:

Using bifocals which are set for a typical reading distance of sixteen inches, and where computer monitors are usually further away than sixteen inches.
The set distance of the computer monitor causing the worker to focus on one specific distance for a long period of time.
The fact that information on a computer monitor is brightest in the middle then fades out, as it gets closer to the edge. This causes the eyes to overwork to compensate and can result in strain to the eyes.
Prolonged use of the computer without adequate breaks, causing increased stress and strain to the eyes.
Inadequate or improper placement and/or use of lighting. (glares too much or is too dark).
Other eye problems. (allergies, dry eyes, unaligned eye muscles, etc.)
There are simple steps one can take to limit the amount of eye fatigue or strain you may experience when working at a computer for long periods of time, including:

Moving the monitor at least twenty inches from your eyes and keeping it at eye level.
Taking twenty-second eye breaks and focusing on objects far away during the breaks. Try to incorporate these breaks every thirty minutes of work time.
Use of document holders to keep your eyes from constantly having to refocus on different media with different lighting.
Reduce the glare on the screen. (eliminate or reducing overhead or direct light, invest in a LCD Glare filter)
Use Glare Guard to reduce glare.
Rob rotation, such as switching tasks every 30-60 minutes in order to reduce strain on eyes and increase overall productivity by being active

Forget a cushion, get a better chair. Something full height, adjustable head/neck support, adjustable lumbar, seat tilt and slide, arms that raise, lower, tilt, and move farther out (don't slouch on the arms, I remove them from my chairs). This is the most important piece of office equipment after your computer, so invest in it.

I recommend Obusforme. It'll cost you a few hundred, depending on features and finishes (up to high end leathers), but it'll be worth every dollar and then some...

The second most important investment you can make is a very big or dual monitor setup. There have been many studies that show productivity is much higher in an individual with 2 monitors.

I have a Dell 24" and a Viewsonic 21" side by side. You can pick up a 24" monitor these days for less than $350 dollars. Do yourself a favor and buy two.

Edit: Obus Forme do make an extensive line of seat cushions too... but I'd still go for the full chair. http://www.obusforme.com/category_nav.asp?ID=13

I try to maintain my physical strength, as I see it as important tool for my ability to work. I sleep 9h each day. I eat three times a day, and during that time I do NOT work, I read newspaper or a book. I go at least three times a week to a workout. I eat no shit: No fast food, no chocolate, no koffee, no white bread and what else the industry wants that we kill us with.

Am I still a domainer?

There are chairs simulating a large ball. There is no back-supporting part, and the seat-part can move in all directions, since the main-shift can tilt in each direction. With those you HAVE to sit upright. They cost about 500 to 1,000 bucks.

Monitors: Look at that one: www.my-desktop.info
With that one you move your neck so often, that you never get neck-hurtings any more. It cost some space, and you will have to make your own custom desk.

Thats probably because you had been Quaterback in shool, and you get 23 in 2009?

Once you are over 40, you can't do that any more.

Ahh, only now I see: Your are Italian: Then you CAN do it. Italians can do everything, they still look slim and good and healthy.

Picked up an HP 24" off their site of all places for $248. This was not a refurb. Just happened to look on there on day and they were having this incredible sale something like $100 off, $50 instant rebate, Free shipping. It is phenom and has made a mega difference.

For those of you that do graphics, this is unbelievable. From the image, you can see it swivels vertical as well as the traditional landscape mode.

As someone mentioned, having it at eye level is crucial.

And a chair that is made for the back is paramount.

Throw away the traditional keyboard. Get a very comfortable ergonomic keyboard. They are more natural to your wrist angles and make the experience much better.

All in all, you are looking at about $800 retail to make the time at the computer more comfy. Perhaps $500 with sales coming up.

If you do a tremendous amount of graphics like I do or spend 8-12 hours a day at your space, you owe this to yourself. One trip to the doctor for carpel tunnel syndrome diagnosis and pills will top this amount.

Your body will thank you.

Addendum: HP business currently has a 22" wide for $259.

It does not swivel (pivot for horizontal and vertical) but your eyes and brain will thank you.

If I had to buy new at the moment, I would rather go for some 30"'s, and put these in Pivot Mode (vertical). A 30" in Pivot Mode still has the same resolution horizontal than other large displays in horizontal mode, but you double in vertical resolution. Put some of these together, and you feel you can breath. 3 to 4 is good for a starter.
