I wonder if Donnacha's "auto-renew" doesnt kick in till the last couple of days.

Seems like mine sometimes are last days renews, and as long as my registrar doesnt let it drop and I have money in my reseller account, I dont mind them going down to the wire.

Network Solutions is taking every measure they can so your domain does NOT renew, if your credit card was declined or expired, dont expect them to notify you.

I contacted one guy that had his domain expiring at NS, it was due to be auctioned off at SN on July 7th, he called NS 5 days prior to renew it because the system would not let him, they gave him the run around and tried to charge him some fee, he asked how long he had before the domain expired, guess what they said? 60 days!

Maybe he should of asked, "how long before I lose it".

Donnacha (if you're still reading this thread), now that everything is settled, I have to ask the obvious question: Would you have accidently let the name drop if it hadn't been stolen and brought to your attention that way? Seems you were getting awfully close to the drop date...as that's how he chose names to steal.

Let me make these two points very clear as I have not just discussed this with others but witness it...

Networksolutions and snapnames work together , therefore when a name will become available at snap it can be found there as such....HOWEVER it does not always reflect this in the whois data even netsol's whois data ! So not only can they wait till the final day to renew at times ( Susan mentioned she has seen her names renewed last day for years as well ) but they also do not always change the registration info to reflect a pending renewal or delete up until the very last day. Prime example and one that pissed me off was Subscribe.com , look at the whois, good good good dropping baam at auction ! No 15-30 or 60 day whois to reflect this.

Now I have theories but most of the names I search that showed 1 yr remaining that turned out to be dropping tend to be " premiums " . Hhhhmmm pure luck the domainers in those auctions just so happen to stumble on them via searches of their own at snap , no insider info right ?????

I can agree some if not most stumble upon such names but do believe there is corruption . Where there is a will there's a way and to say there is absolutely no funny business would show how naive you are. I dont know who controls or monitors what at netsol or who knows who, all I know is what I see. But not naive enough to think its not possible.

Well lets not always assume the worst. Everyday names are bought/sold just before drop, nothing unusual about it. Maybe he had them on auto renew and changed his email, many possible reasons. Best to wait and hear the whole story.

I am surprised reading this thread. I think each claim of a stolen domain name, or fraud should be dealt directly between a user and administration.
I think admins can demand the user to provide proof of payment/transaction
and post the results.
I personally don't understand why this thread lasted 29 pages? My favorite post is about Mr.Deleted posting the message to AllienGG how he ruined his reputation. Maybe he did, but you know Mr.Deleted you are a real clown and
I don't have any respect for you too for posting a guide how to steal a domain. I don't understand why this guy is not getting a warning?
Oh, I am sorry, he is a respected domainer, he is registered in 2004 way before most of us came here. Who gives a crap!

Dolansco, I agree that this thread is useful, and I want to thank you for uncovering yet another problem on our forum. In my last post I wrote that I was surprised that it took 29 pages to ban a user. Dolansco, you reported your findings on 06-18-2007, and AlienGG was banned on 07-03-2007.

I believe that the management of the forum could contact AlienGG user the same day, and demand explanations. Do you really believe that it should take 2 weeks to go back and forth to find out the truth?

I am glad that DNF helped original owner to get his name back,but there must be more done to prevent this from happening in future on Registrars/ICANN side.

DNF has not right to demand information about our listed domains, they do however have a right to cancel membership if proof is presented that the listed domain was stolen.

Come on guys/gals, he just posted how he thought it was done. Most likely they hacked the email account, and changed login info and stuff is my guess.

And unless your really good at using proxy's in tandom, to hide your tracks they will track down who did it. They got programs to crack emails, by brute force. so people would be wise to use, really good combo's user name and passwords. So it would take years to brute force, or if they get your email they can just let the brute force run on it.

They do it all the time on porn sites, hotmail is a big target from the word go. It's not like there not ways to protect your self, and if you don't don't be shocked, if one day your account gets creaked. I think it's good to know this stuff, if people just blame who took them then no one will, take steps to protect their accounts.

Letting domains get so close to expiring is a no no, using hotmail is a no no, using easy login info is bad. Opening a link from a email is a no no, not changing the login some times, and not checking your domains is a no no. And not checking your email weekly, is a very bad no no and these all need to be done.

I pointed out a few things:

the best names areat a registar that has been in business for a long time, longer then any other, making them older then any other.

Those names have a higher chance of having expired email addresses then any other domains.

If this system is not corrected, a lot of names are wide open at the moment for being hijacked: if the owner has an invalid whois admin contact email address.

I did not want to post that again, but people are trying to say that I did it? well give me a break, does no one want the problem fixed? Somone needs to do somthing to fix it. I am not going to hijack the names, but if the problem is not fixed, it just might cause one person to hijack a lot of domains over night, all the top names.

Mr.deleted is at domains a long time , so maybe he knows more tham most , i would guess ... Its also not his first time stopping a thief which adds to his credibility , and explains his knowledge IMO.

Is that some sort of joke? I've been investigating and dealing with all sorts of illegal crap on the internet for the better part of a decade. Of course I know a number of risks that might lead to loss of a domain.

People need to know about things like this in order to protect themselves.

Well I am on my honeymoon but dont leave the country for 2 days and had to reply to the latest comments.

Provider, it didnt take two weeks to ban him, Adam was asked not to so the names could be returned first.
You seem to hold something personal against Joe ( Mr. Deleted ) I dont care for it and you disresprected all the work and effort we as a community put into this thread to recover the names by stating this thread lasted 29 pages and it suprised you and " in the future " admin should do it . Something not one person could accomplish alone. Many calls, pm's emails etc. Instead of saying great job guys glad to see people are watching, you were critical. :disappointed:

Raider Girl, I disagree with you on those who know are the ones that have statement. I read like crazy, watch the history channel like crazy , art history, business, past and present success stories etc. Knowledge is power, it is what you do with it that speaks of your character.
