Got an offer from a person through Sedo for one of my sites. Here is the comment they left with the offer.

"Hello! Could we have access a short moment to the back-office of your site because we would like to know if it is "easy" to modify the contents of the internal pages? Thank you!"

It is a HTML site. How hard is it to modify? I kind of smell something fishy but then again, I am suspicious by nature. Is this common?

A screenshot if there is an admin panel should be good enough for them. Do NOT give access to someone you don't know. In fact, you wouldn't want to give access to most people you do know.

Yeah, Jon hit is spot on. Give them a screenshot. If they need more access then you need to tell them to take a hike. What if I wrote you an email saying I needed access to your bank account to make sure you had enough money to pay me for (insert anything here).

If it is plain HTML it is completely understood what it is like.

Have fun..make some money...dont get screwed!

Great. Thank you both. So, screenshot can be taken through Imageshack.com? Is Dontgetscrewed.com available? :cheeky:

Too funny. Thanks again Jonathan. Nice to have people to bounce things off of.

Update: Said no to backend access but yes to screenshot. Counter offered and they cancelled negotiations. So I would say a lesson learned. That's fine...I have a whole network of site in this particular genre. Would like to sell them as a package anyways. Thanks again.

it is incredibly illogical that someone would ask for access to a site before buying it, especially if it is not dynamic.
I would tell them to view the source code from their browser, not even give them a screenshot.

Thanks for not giving them access to my server :)

If they were a real buyer, they wouldn't need this - you were right to be suspicious - good work!

totally no reason to know your backend if it is just some html pages.

just tell him, what he needs is just notepad + ftp client
